Review of Five Mile Charlie
The bond between children and their pets is something I love to see, maybe because I have a pet too. I particularly liked how Carly and Charlie, the llama, make a good team. Although Five Mile Charlie by Kimberly Adams is a sequel, it can be understood independently of its prequel. In this installment, Charlie, the llama, notices that Grumpy, the mean coyote who lives on the mountain, is always furious and annoying. He and Carly then think of a solution.
Their solution leads them to the library, where they intend to read up all they can get on coyotes to find out how they can help Grumpy. There they learn that coyotes are pack animals and that a single one living alone might mean that he has been separated from his pack. Charlie offers to donate some wool for a woolen coat. Queen Nora and the rest of the bees offer to make the woolen coat. Read on to discover what plans Carly and the animals have in store for Grumpy.
The illustrations were one thing worthy of the utmost commendation in this story. They were beautifully done and captured in such a way as to hold the children's attention. I loved the characters in the story; Charlie, the llama, loved making everyone around him happy, as we could see in his idea of reaching out to Grumpy, the lonely coyote. I'm sure children would learn some lessons, like kindness and generosity toward others. The grammar was very friendly, and children would no doubt find it easy to read.
The only thing I disliked was that it was brief, which is subjective as I wanted to know all that would happen. I will look forward to the sequel. Every other thing was on point. The plot, illustrations, and characters were all well-thought-out. I did not encounter a single error throughout my reading, implying that this book was perfectly well-edited.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for the positive reasons highlighted above. It is a fantastic book for children. I recommend it to children between the ages of 4 and 10.
