Review of The Devil Tried
Life is spiritual. Those that have had several encounters with darkness would be able to testify convincingly. Robert W. Van Kalsbeek (Eric Seaton) is one of the testifiers of how darkness can mesmerise people’s lives. In this book, The Devil Tried, we journey with Eric on his encounter with the darkness.
Eric Seaton is an engineer in the oil and gas industry and lives in Coweta, a small town outside Tulsa. He has two daughters and a very supportive wife. Because of his job's nature, Eric has another job requiring him to travel 24 hours away from home. He is to travel with Lisa, a colleague. On their way to this job, Lisa got an appointment for another job that was about a 10-hour drive from his town, and she helped him get on the job. On arriving at the new job location, their boss, Danny, introduced them to another colleague, Zac, whom he got closer to. However, Derick grew to like Eric. How did their friendship go? How did this influence their lives and work? This is a must-read for everyone.
The Devil Tried is divided into 30 chapters, with each chapter having a heading that depicts the chapter's content. I like that it is written as a diary entry, detailing each day's activities, especially his encounters. I could feel his emotions, and I felt pity for him at some point. But I thank God for his life. I like that he included pictures he took with Daisy, a deer that was fond of him. The inclusion of this picture added a touch of reality and genuineness to the story.
I like the character of Eric. He is warm, respectful, and strong-willed. I like the type of relationship that exists between him and his wife. That made me like him. His wife is very much respected and loved by him. He listens to her and does everything to always chase after her, even when distractions want to come his way. This attitude is very important to me. He shows how disciplined he is. I also envy the friendship between him and Zac. Zac always proves that he is dependable. We all need someone like Zac in our lives. The fact that he went on with his deal on the car even after the accident is astounding.
There are some takeaways from this book. The first is to be prayerful. No force of darkness can withstand a prayerful life. Another is to surround oneself with dependable people and not keep quiet whenever one is going through issues. Also, having a close relationship with one spouse is an advantage. I like that Tina is there for Erica through his encounters. Her reassuring love is strong enough for him to pull through. Knowing that someone will always listen to one’s small talk without judging you is relieving.
And last but not least, it is to be vigilant. The devil is on the loose, looking for someone to devour. Eric was in the devil’s prowling range, and he could testify. In his case, I can say the devil indeed tried, but God is not sleeping.
The book is professionally edited, with a few errors in the misspelling of names. Apart from this, there is nothing to dislike in this book. I salute the courage of Eric in writing this book to enlighten people about the true spirituality of life. This book has nothing confusing; therefore, I will rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to all people who like reading books about supernatural beings. This is a book that I enjoyed reading as it is full of lessons and reflects that agents of darkness truly exist. The book is not scary.
