Lovely review. Though this would not normally be my first choice of book, I like that it touches on history, albeit in a fictional way. Many of us are aware of the battles and blood shed fighting for lands. The dischords from these wars are still alive today. Imagine roaming freely on lands your people have owned for years and years and one day having to be fighting for these lands and your life. The author does a great job of portraying history with events that ring so true to life. Kudos on making it to BOTD.

Though I am not a fan of historical fiction myself the book does sound interesting. It just shows that people of different backgrounds can become respected friends and that we are all the same. As a Native American who resides on reservation land, it is tragic that peaceful existence was not something settlers and tribes didn't consider. The mass genocide ordered would be hard to follow, and I wonder how Mackenzie and Shadow Hawk handled it. Nice review.

I liked that the Lakota boy didn't need to learn English but it was Joshua who learned his language. Anyways, I think you should have named the Lakota boy since he played a major role in the book
