Review of Demon Freaks
Ron and Bing Slaughter are identical twin brothers who are high school seniors. They are in a band with their friends, Meat, the drummer, and Kaitlyn, who plays the keyboard. The twins are constantly clashing with their history teacher, Mr Brom. They are on the verge of being expelled after they performed a song making fun of Mr Brom at the school dance. When the band decide to meet at Meat’s cabin to prepare for the big test, a freak storm causes a citywide power outage. A short while later, the teacher shows up at the doorstep, wearing a dark cloak and carrying a dagger. What follows is a night of danger and adventure, as the teens are dragged into a war between two evil cults looking to summon a demon from the depths of hell.
Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R Hardison is a thrilling fantasy book about the fight between good and evil. It contains all elements of a classic fantasy book - evil cults, demons, rituals, secret organisations with secret lairs, mysterious creatures and even psychics.
I enjoyed the pacing of the book. All the events took place within 24 hours, so the story is fast-paced, which keeps the book exciting. Regardless, no part of the story felt rushed or was left unexplained. It felt like a new twist was coming up every ten pages. The plot was well thought out, with no plot holes, though the conclusion somehow left a door open for a sequel. The author foreshadowed most of the major twists in the preceding chapters and rounded up all subplots nicely at the end. Demon Freaks is one of those books that will leave you satisfied with the build-up and the conclusion.
I found very little to dislike about this book, but if I must point at one thing, it was how the situation seemed to escalate at a mind blogging rate. Many things happened one after the other to push the story to the climax, which made the book seem unrealistic. It felt like too much of a coincidence that certain events occur. However, that is a common trait of the genre. After all, one does not turn to science fiction in search of a realistic narrative.
Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R Hardison is an enjoyable read. The plot is captivating and thrilling, not to mention original. The cast is charming and relatable, and the character development is spectacular. I did run into a few grammatical errors as I read, but they did not affect the flow of the book. I am compelled to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is easily one of the best books I have read in a while.
The protagonists are all teenagers, which led me to believe this book is aimed at younger readers. However, anyone who appreciates an action-packed book with a fast-paced storyline should try this one. Fans of fantasy books will also enjoy this. The description of violence can be intense, so I would not recommend this to children or sensitive readers.
