Poetry anyone?

Post by LoveHatesYou »

Who likes poetry? I like some poetry. Dickinson for one, because only a crazy Broad can write about her brain Crashing through the floor and space Itself and make it sound Good (anyone catch the random capital reference?). And there is an older fellow I like as well- his name is escaping me right this moment- .....Bukowski. He's grouchy ind sometimes mean, and brutal, I love him too. He passed away a couple years agao, but I was lucky enough to meet him when he spoke at UCSB when I was in college- he was facinating. He sees life for what it is- it ain't always beautiful.

Your turn...

haha i was thinking about bukowski when i started to read your post. i <3 that crazy drunk. He has some sick(as in gross) poems.

as a side note, check out the song bukowski by modest mouse

"Woke up this morning and it seemed to me,
that every night turns out to be
A little more like Bukowski.
And yeah, I know he's a pretty good read.
But God who'd wanna be?
God who'd wanna be such an asshole?"

Wiiliam Blake. I love love love his work & think it is really amazing how painstakingly each volume of his poetry was created. Each manuscript was printed on copper plate. He had to write the text backwards, and each book was hand illustrated and colored. Now that takes passion! I have tons of free time & supplies & I've yet to make "thank you" cards for Christmas gifts.

I love Thomas Hood. He was a 19th century poet, with a sense of humor. Two of his poems that I enjoyed are "No" and "The Last Man". The first line of "The Last Man" is " 'Twas in the year two thousand and one". I couldn't believe my eyes, when I read it for the first time in November, 2001!! I remember, because I had a very painful, shattered tibia plateau, and I was just getting over the worst of the pain, but still had to stay off of that leg.

Blake is amazing

Wallace Stevens is great too.

I also like poetry. What I didn't know until recently was that Sylvia Plath wrote some poetry. She's a really interesting poet. Also, Lucille Clifton. She's so upfront about the way she feels about things. Her poetry is different, and I would definitely recommend her.

Oh yes, I love poetry. I'll list some poets who are still alive I enjoy:

Thomas Sayers Ellis (the new T.S.E.)
D. A. Powell (Mr. Award Winner)
Emmett Wheatfall (smooth rhythmic poetry)
Terrance Hayes (award winner)
Saul Williams (spoken word demi-god)
Carlajean Valluzzi (up and coming talent)

I think it's important to support poets while they're still alive and can appreciate it.

Seconding Lucille Clifton. She's an easy read too, without sacrificing meaning or feeling. The poems are short and easy to read and re-read. I'm also a huge fan of Richard Siken. He only has one book out, that I know of, but it's incredible. Also, Clementine von Radics. She has a book (or possibly more) out, and she's also very active on tumblr, and she's just great. Honestly, I'm not that into older poets. I feel like it's mostly old white guys puffed up about being old white guys. Like Wordsworth. I just. I want to gently make him actually go into nature without any protection or supplies for a couple weeks, since he thinks technology is the devil and all. I am fond of John Donne, but that's about it. The Romantic period as a whole is not my jam. I say this with only a cursory knowledge of older poetry.
