Official Review: Shattered Duality - I am an Alien: Self...

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Shattered Duality - I am an Alien: Self Help Inspiration from Nature Intelligence" by Cristina Strenko.]

Shattered Duality - I Am an Alien: Self Help Inspiration from Nature Intelligence by Cristina Strenko is a nonfiction self-help book. Now, I have read and skimmed my share of self-help books and I must say this is the first one that I actually enjoyed. It didn’t further depress me like some have a tendency to do, it made simple suggestions that made you wonder why you hadn’t thought of it before. There is also nothing clinical about it, which is where other self-helps lose me.

The book is an eleven chapter journey taking you from how you should find a way to better handle your negative thoughts and beliefs to the confusion and beauty that is love. The author is able to explain her knowledge in a very creative way by using the “alien” angle. The opening chapter uses this angle as the starting point to clearing your mind and any preconceived notion you may have about life and its lessons.

My favorite piece in this book is the Beliefs chapter. As a twenty something kind of floating through life, there are many beliefs that do instill a form of fear in me and in this chapter, Cristina brings up ways of looking at them differently and whether they are really your beliefs or are they beliefs that have just been forced on you. I also appreciated her use of an excerpt by Horatio Dresser.

I think if there is one thing that may be just a bit off putting in this book, it is the use of “God”. Though not completely drowned in references, for those who aren’t overly religious, this may come across as preachy and a bit uncomfortable. There are also some times where you might find yourself stopping to really try and understand what’s been written. Some times because it’s a point that really hits you and sometimes because it’s sort of confusing to process.

I give Shattered Duality 3 out of 4 stars. I think it is definitely a gem in the sea of self-help books. Features some unique ways of thinking and it doesn’t bore you. I would recommend this to others who may need a dose of inspiration or those who just want a better way of understanding some of life’s wonders.
