As a novice hobbyist golfer, I found this book very helpful. Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book by Kalliope Barlis is a pocket-sized guide to help golfers achieve their goals. She discusses topics such as using your brain and senses to visualise your shots before you make them and replacing your memories of bad shots with good ones. She also gives tips about the best ways to practice different shots, such as sand shots, downhill and uphill shots, and reading your putts. Lastly, she discusses ways to optimise your time while playing golf on the course and how to utilise your scorecard as a handy record of your game so you can improve on it during your practice sessions in the future.

I recently started playing golf with my partner after we moved towns, and he didn’t have his usual golfing partners close by for a weekly game. Since he has been playing golf from a very young age, I found the idea of trying to keep up with him very daunting. To overcome this, I have watched multiple videos about improving your game. But none of them has felt even half as helpful as this little volume of tips. I also enjoy the fact that it is written by a woman. Since golf has always been quite a predominantly male game, it’s encouraging to know that there are women out there paving the way for the rest of us to enjoy a good day on the green.

Even though the author states in the preface that she is going to refrain from using most standard golf terminology, she still does use quite a few words that might not be known to novice golfers. It would have been nice if she included a small glossary at the end or beginning of the book to define the terms, especially since this book is intended as a quick read and not something that the reader might have to go and research on the internet when they don’t understand certain terms.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars since it was well edited, and it is a book that I will feel happy to recommend to my fellow golfers as a good pocket guide to carry with them during their games.

This book is a good book for novice golfers to use to improve their game quickly. Some of the explanations in the 2nd and 3rd parts of the book might be “old news” for the more seasoned golfers, but the first part about visualising your golf game can assist all golfers, no matter their experience levels.
