Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Matthew Tysz's novel, We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies blends science fiction and fantasy. This novel is the first of seven in the series We Are Voulhire. Through a multi-character point of view, the reader discovers the terrifying secrets and politics of the great nation of Voulhire. From Voulhire's King Wilhelm to the lowly immigrant Galen Bray, citizens live in fear of the powerful rebels, the Riva Rohavi, and the evil mages behind them. Magic permeates the entire country. Some use it for good, while many others use it for evil.
I thoroughly enjoyed the multi-character point of view between chapters. This detail captures the diversity of Voulhire and its sneaky politics. As a reader, I felt like a fly on the wall watching events unfold in this magical kingdom. The author shows incredible creativity with the supernatural elements of the plot. This story is reminiscent of a medieval kingdom with kings, knights, and castles. However, the author creates unique depth by including mages, new religions, and the alternate magical universe of Caromentis. I am excited to see how the story develops in the next book.
I found nothing to dislike about this book. Although the plot is complex and has many characters, the author creates depth in the characters that make each person relatable, even the evil ones. The detail within the story sets the scene for the series to continue. At the end of the book, the author includes a reference guide that helps readers keep locations, terms, and characters straight. This guide is a helpful resource and increased my understanding and enjoyment of the novel.
I rate We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies 5 out of 5 stars. This novel is exceptionally well-edited, and I found zero errors throughout the text. The author shows incredible imagination throughout the plot by developing this fantasy world and the magic that weaves throughout. I enjoyed reading this novel and was fascinated by the storyline. The rest of the series promises to be as exciting as the first book.
I highly recommend this novel to readers who enjoy the fantasy genre. The use of magic is abundant throughout the plot, and the setting has a medieval tone. Readers who like to read multi-part series will want to check out this book, as it is the first of seven books. This book is inappropriate for young readers due to violence, foul language, and sexual misconduct.
