Butterfly Awakens by Meg Nocero is a memoir dedicated to the author’s deceased mother, Mary Jo. Nocero takes the reader on a journey through the struggles of life, describing her years as a trial attorney, her fall into a deep depression, the loss of her mother, and how she dealt with that grief. The reader experiences the author’s trip to Santiago, her spiritual pilgrimage that gives her blisters on her feet and makes the reader feel her pain with her. It’s a beautiful search for meaning in life after a great loss.

This is a beautifully written book; it touched my soul in a way that very few books have. I found myself crying while reading about Nocero’s mother and how she dealt with Mary Jo’s pain. However, my favorite part was her trip to El Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain. The way she described how hard it was, how the blisters that popped up on her feet almost prevented her from finishing the walk made me crave doing it too. I love super hard challenges that almost seem impossible to finish and the way Nocero described her pilgrimage was so very enticing.

There honestly isn’t anything I disliked about this memoir. It is the most inspirational book I have read in a very long time. It stirs the deepest parts of our consciousness and soul and it makes us think about what’s really important in life. I honestly felt like I was taking this physical and mental journey right along with the author, and while she was learning new things about herself, I was doing the same thing. It feels like with this book she was trying to guide readers using her own experience, and in my humble opinion, she excelled in it.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is pure sunshine, even though I shed so many tears while reading it. I honestly couldn’t put it down, and I only did when I physically needed to. It is a true masterpiece and I think this author needs more recognition for her content and writing style. The way Nocero uses words is so entrancing that it almost makes you forget you are reading a book. You end up feeling this story deep in your soul. The book is also undoubtedly professionally edited. I didn’t find any grammatical errors in it.

I would recommend this book to everyone, but especially to anyone who’s going through grief brought by the loss of a family member. I think it could really help people overcome any type of difficult time. If you know someone who has just lost a loved one, this is a great book to gift them. It is truly a masterpiece. Go read it!
