Review of In It Together (2nd Edition Hardcover from B&N)
In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All is a nonfiction book full of philosophic thoughts, ideas, and suggestions to help readers understand and cope with the real-life situations, both good and bad, that are common to us all. The author, Eckhart Aurelius Hughes, presents an excellent study of how our self-awareness of our spiritual and physical selves brings us to the realization that, although we are all separated by space and time, we are all united in the potential struggles we are all subjected to. While it is true that people everywhere have their own individual good and bad situations, the ways in which we manage these situations are similar. This book teaches us to look beyond the physical selves we see in the mirror to our real selves which are a composite of our past, present, and future selves, and to not worry about the past which we cannot change, or the future which we cannot control. To help with this, Hughes offers eleven suggestions of things we can consider letting go of to achieve true inner peace.
What I like most about this book is that it is one of those rare books that you can read over and over and not reach the point that you will permanently shelve it away to collect dust. This is my second reading, and I am looking forward to the third. I have set a personal goal to read it at least once every six months.
By me not being an avid reader of philosophy, what I disliked most was having to look up a couple of words and terms which the author did not describe in enough detail for my understanding. But this is a reflection on me, not the author. Most readers will not have this concern.
I rate this book five out of five stars. It is written good with organized chapters and beneficial content. It is certainly well worth the time and effort to read. I also give the highest rating to the physical appearance of the book. The beautifully designed hardback cover and dust jacket are a nice enhancement to a display shelf.
This book is recommended, not only to readers of philosophy, but also to anyone who likes nonfiction self-help books. Regardless of titles, material possessions, religious and political affiliations, and social and financial status, the suggested paradigm presented by Hughes applies equally to all people everywhere. However, it is not recommended to those who are hoping to find a magical answer to life’s problems or a step-by-step process to solve them.
