Re: Naming your children

Post by Happily Candied »

I like to keep track of the most popular names picked by parents every year. (Lists are usually released in January.) Bella, Jacob and Edward have been huge favorites for the past few years. Oh, and people LOVE naming their cats and dogs Bella, a craze that started well before the Twilight series became popular. I'm not a fan of the name, mostly because it's overused.

I don't have children yet, but I wouldn't be opposed to using a name from a favorite book, or even a name that was partially inspired by a character.

Kind of like The Boy Named Sue. Some of the names they give kids nowdays are really off the wall.

My daughter is Erin, I teased her she could always make it more unique by changing it to Arynne and then we saw someone on TV who had actually done that!!!

I personally had always wanted an E name if I couldn't name my child Arwen or Galadriel, at least an E would sound very much like an elf.

My husband chose this name, but I was happy to go along with it.

No, but I wanted to! My husband had a fit, so no go in our house! It would've been a kick, though.

No, I haven't. But I did consider it. My husband didn't like the names though. Even if he did like it, I'm not sure those names would have won in the end though. I loved naming my children, so I think I would have wanted something I came up with, not something from a book.

No, but I plan on it at some point. The names won't be too conspicuous though, like Hermione.

My partner and I could not agree on a girl's name! I had a ton of names and he didn't like any of them. The ONLY name he came up with was one I hated! Luckily we had a boy (we'd agreed on a boy's name very early on).

My son is called Max; he wasn't named after any specific character but I'm looking forward to reading him "Where the Wild Things Are" :)

I don't have children as of yet, but if I ever do have them my favorite names for girls are all after female characters: Lucy from Chronicles of Narnia, Wendy from Peter Pan, and Clara from The Nutcracker.

One of the parents from my work has three children all named after literary characters as well; from Roald Dahl, Shakespeare, and Robert Louis Stevenson.

I don't have any kids but if I did I'd name them all Frederick, even the girls .... I don't know why .... *shrugs* ... we've never had a "Frederick" in the family before. ALSO, whenever I wanted them I'd only have to yell "FRED!" and they all would come.

UpDATo - In case anyone is wondering ... nothing made me happy today.

I haven't (because I have no children) but I do know someone who named their son Theoden. I had to stop for a moment when I heard this and then wondered if the name was from the book or the movie, because I am secretly the kind of person who thinks it would make a difference. Still, I don't think it's a bad name. I think Mithrandir would be a great name for a cat, though.

While not my favorite character, there was no way I could convince my husband of Killashandra or Menolly. I was able to get a 3rd choice, especially since I knew someone in college with the name. We chose Rowan, who is both a character in Anne McCaffrey's books and Anne Rice (though I did not remember than until after she was born). We thought it was a great original name. Unbelievably, there is another Rowan in the same grade, two that are two years younger, and two more at my son's school. They are a mix of girls and boys too!

You've given me a burst of inspiration .... instead of Fred-o I could name them Frodo.
