Review of Terms of Service
Sometimes the things we wish for aren't all they seem, and the adventures we seek can disappoint us when the thrill is gone. In a world where artificial intelligence is at the forefront of everything, everything seems far-fetched and futuristic, but not to Kim. Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a futuristic novel that revolves around the life of the protagonist, Kim, but takes a solid stance to describe the advances of AI in the world. Kim is an employee at the artificial intelligence surveillance state whose job is to fix any malfunctions of the AI and, through consistent training, teach it how to operate in real-life scenarios.
Kim's job, which seemed like an enjoyable adventure at first, took a disappointing turn for the worse and gave her no joy at all. She was a young researcher at an artificial intelligence company where every aspect of their lifestyle was AI-controlled. Everything changes when they find a settlement of people who live a different life from theirs. How does this settlement affect them? Is this the start of an exciting adventure? Continue reading to find out the rest of the adventure story.
I enjoyed the author's detailed and expressive writing style, as he described everything vividly and imaginatively. The environment and character development were superb. The book put me in a trance as I wondered if all the concepts of AI and its integration into our daily lives would be revolutionary or cause more chaos than good. The notion that the future of AI was no longer speculative but real amazed me. The book was slow-paced, but I believe this was an attempt to help the readers understand each concept. We, as humans, are prone to making mistakes, but we can correct them. In the case of AI, this could cause a great deal of chaos. Kim Stanfill extensively describes all the disadvantages of a completely AI-controlled society, especially emotional ones like loneliness and a poor upbringing. By the end of the book, I appreciated the regular, non-AI-controlled world.
I have nothing to dislike about this book, as it was insightful and introduced a new perspective and chain of thought on the implementations of AI.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is exceptionally well-edited. It has detailed descriptions of the environment and characters. This book also presented the right amount of suspense, and for these reasons, I believe it is deserving of this rating.
I recommend this book to readers interested in AI and its impacts on the environment and people. I recommend it to people interested in human psychology and AI's emotional impacts.
