Review of Terms of Service
[Following is a volunteer review of "Terms of Service" by Craig W. Stanfill.]
Terms of Service: Subject to change without notice by Craig W. Stanfill takes place in a future society where artificial intelligence surveillance is the norm. The protagonist, Kim, leads a seemingly average life working as an AI trainer. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that she is haunted by past traumas. An unexpected adventure with her best friend leads her to question her understanding of her reality and the true nature of the AI technology that controls every aspect of their lives. As she uncovers the truth about the society she lives in, she is faced with the harsh reality that she is powerless to change it, leaving readers wondering if she will be able to find a way to reconcile her newfound understanding of her world.
The novelist has done an admirable job of constructing the dystopian world and detailing all the regulations. The story started with an unusual prologue, in which the duration of service is displayed, which served as an innovative way to introduce the readers to the novel. The narrative began at a slow pace, which I found to be advantageous as it gave me ample time to delve deep into the story and grasp the main character and all the intricate rules of her society.
I was particularly intrigued by the protagonist's interactions with her household appliances, which are also AI; it was quite fascinating to see how these AIs have their personalities. Despite the novel's somber atmosphere, the protagonist's conflicts with her household appliances provided much-needed comic relief.
The book presented a nuanced perspective on society—both its current shortcomings and potential future issues. The main character's struggles were depicted in a realistic and relatable manner, making the story all the more engaging. The author's writing style is simple and effective, capable of evoking a wide range of emotions in the reader. The use of heavy drinking and drug use in the story is fitting and adds to the theme.
The only thing I disliked about this book was the beginning, which did not grab my attention as much as I had hoped, but as I progressed, the story became more engaging. Also, the book was exceptionally edited. There were no grammatical or typographical errors. The plot was well-crafted and kept me on the edge of my seat. For this reason, I rate Terms of Service: Subject to change without notice by Craig W. Stanfill 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy dystopian and science fiction, specifically those interested in the topic of AI.
