Throughout our lives, we are constantly told of the importance of earning money for a decent life. We are expected to start working in our early twenties and stop in our 60s, making the majority of our adult life focused on one goal: retirement. Yet, the majority has not thought twice about a retirement plan regardless of it being our end goal. As the life expectancy of Americans becomes longer, the need to have a financial plan for the future increases. This is what E. Alan Fleischauer addresses in his book Reconfiguration, which conveys not only the importance of planning ahead but also how to start with this ambitious program.

The author divides the book into 13 chapters, which are written more as lessons in their respective topics. The first chapter serves as an introduction to the topic at hand, followed by lessons on budgeting, investing, life insurance, and all the other topics needed to build a successful financial retirement model. From detailed explanations to graphs, Fleischauer uses all methods possible to teach the reader about investments, life insurance, budgeting their income, and so forth. The length he goes on to explain every topic in great detail so that nothing is missing is an aspect I quite enjoyed.

Another aspect I enjoyed is the witty writing. I expected formal, professional language to be used as it is a non-fictional self-help book that details every aspect of building a successful financial plan. However, what I got were paragraphs of witty and clever writing, followed by relatable jokes, the author’s personal experiences, and even inspirational quotes. This combination created a fun reading experience for me regardless of the serious topic at hand. In that way, the author kept my attention on his lessons while allowing me to have a good laugh every now and then.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book reminded me of the most important aspect I never acknowledged in life: financial planning. Whether one just started their work life through a new job or had been saving for a while, we must acknowledge that the topic of financial planning was never thoroughly discussed with the majority of us regardless of whether it is the way to a comfortable retirement. Reconfiguration not only expands the topic beyond the idea of retirement but also teaches valuable lessons on the financial side of a time when we will no longer be able to work as hard as we did in our younger years. Furthermore, I would like to strongly highlight that this book was well written and well edited.

I recommend this book to Americans who are either making their way into the workforce or middle-aged Americans. I am emphasizing the American audience because Fleischauer focuses mainly on the American economy and other aspects of American life such as life insurance, etc. Readers from other countries might not find certain aspects helpful as such systems are not popular in their countries. A comfortable and easy retirement is something every aging person has a right to after a long work life. Having a financial plan set in place early on is the way to achieve that goal. Readers of this book will definitely know where to start.
