In the land of frogs and toads, the frogs rule the roost. They had political power and longer legs than toads. The king of the land, a frog, had a daughter named Tina. Tina fell in love with a toad named Thomas. When she asked her father to allow her to marry Thomas, he refused because Thomas was a toad. The king told her she had to choose between the two frogs that he had chosen for her. Tina and Thomas were both upset, but Thomas came up with a plan. What did he decide to do? Was his plan successful? Read The Clever Toad-The Race by Danny Wilson to find out.

The story of forbidden love has been told many times, but this is a fresh take on that tale. I wasn’t able to immediately predict what Thomas would do, which made it much more interesting. I liked the pictures of the frogs dressed up in royal attire, especially the one of Louie. Something about a frog with a mustache is amusing, and I think children will enjoy that.

I reviewed the Kindle version, which was a little difficult to read because the words were quite squished together. I’m guessing it was due to the difficulty of compressing the paper version into a Kindle version. Aesthetically, that was a challenge. There were also a few errors, though they did not distract from the story. The way Thomas goes about trying to win Tina’s hand in marriage seems a little bit like cheating in certain parts. I don’t know if that is a great message to send to young children. I think if there were more natural obstacles for Grover and Louie rather than set-up ones, it would have been better.

In general, this was a cute story. The editing and somewhat questionable actions of Thomas made me reduce a star to a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

I think this book would be suitable for young children who like books about animals. It’s also good for families who wish to teach their children about persistence. Check out The Clever Toad-The Race by Danny Wilson!
