Review of Haunting Magic
Haunting Magic by Neely Powell is a fictional book full of witches, a medium, shapeshifters, demons, and a Hollywood producer. I was a skeptic about this book. I read the description and thought it wasn’t my type of book. But then I read the sample of the book available online, and I was hooked. This book is actually written by two authors under a pseudonym. It is part of a paranormal series called “The Witches of New Mourne.”
In Haunting Magic, the protagonist is Fiona Burns. Fiona is a witch and a medium who lives in the town of New Mourne, Georgia. Fiona produces a webcast about her work as a medium, which captures the attention of Bailey Powers, a Hollywood producer. He doesn’t believe that mediums are legitimate. But he thinks that Fiona and her work would make fantastic TV. Sparks fly as Bailey and Fiona get to know each other. Fiona’s family (also witches) doesn’t like or trust Bailey. Fiona is determined to make her own decisions about him, the TV show, and the curse that has plagued Fiona’s family for centuries.
I enjoyed reading this paranormal romance. The story was descriptive and full of a fun cast of characters. There were lots of small details that added charm to the plot, like Fiona’s need to eat a lot of calories because communicating with ghosts took a lot of energy. Or Fiona and Bailey’s magnetic and magical pull toward each other that neither of them seemed to be able to control. These details made the story feel original.
If I could have added anything to the story, I would have made the characters more complex. The characters in the story were very extreme. For example, Fiona’s family was suspicious of Bailey and disliked him immediately. They were against the idea of Fiona dating him and the TV show he proposed, and we didn’t get much of an explanation of why. Similarly, Bailey was initially portrayed as a slick Hollywood producer who was unwilling to consider that Fiona might be the real deal. He repeatedly refused to believe that Fiona was authentic in her ability to communicate with ghosts.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. It was a very good book about a family of witches living in a small, southern town. The story was fun to read and felt professionally edited. There were very few errors in the text, and the errors I found didn’t distract me from the story. I took away one star because this book could have been better had the characters been more deeply developed. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys paranormal thrillers and romance novels.

The ghosts in the book were pretty active! Lots and lots of candy consumer, haha.Julie Gebrosky wrote: ↑14 Jan 2023, 20:01 A paranormal romance is an interesting concept. I never thought about needing more calories due to communication with ghosts. This isn’t my type of book either, but I appreciate your review!
