Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a unique science fiction book that deeply delves into the futuristic world where computer technology impacts human lives without reservations. The author is a renowned computer scientist with deep experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Parallel Computing. Little wonder he could write so well about the subject and confidently take its readers on a never-regretful journey into a world where AI dominates.
Computer technology, in vogue at the time, completely changed the lives of everyone in a way different from what we know today. Imagine a world where jobs, families, contacts, clothing, communications, transportation, food, entertainment, sports, the environment, etc., are influenced and controlled by Artificial Intelligence, and cruel punishments are severely meted out on anyone who tries to be rebellious. Such was obtained in these futuristic artificial intelligence surveillance cities where Kim lives. Kim is the protagonist of the story.
Kim is a young, adventurous AI trainer who works at the regional headquarters of the AI company. Despite having her dream job and enjoying the ease and comfort that AI provides, Kim gradually became uncomfortable with her world being under the shackles of AIs and their directors. It started when she and her friend Shan rode past the legal boundaries, learning a few secrets only the directors knew. Kimberly Jefferson Haley further opened Kim's eyes to the unspoken truth of how AIs oppress humans. Who was Kimberly Jefferson Haley? Did Kim later move on to rebel against the very system that groomed her? You'll learn all of this and more if you read the book.
I Like how the author portrayed how a broken home can affect a child's upbringing and character in adulthood. Kim and many other persons were forcefully separated from their families at a very tender age to prevent them from being emotionally attached to their parents. I like how that Kim's AI robot would make coffee for her even before she wakes from her morning sleep. She also had an AI refrigerator that suggested the best healthy food for her to eat daily. As an AI enthusiast, their transportation, guidance, communication system, virtual reality, and other AI-controlled systems were my delights as the whole thing played as a movie in my mind. I love how AI helped them to have a well-ordered society than ours today.
I disliked how AIs were able to erode people's privacy. I didn't particularly appreciate how everyone mandatorily wore the same outfits irrespective of their gender and thereby giving no one any room to create their fashion. I don't like how the author encouraged the use of alcohol, sex, and drugs in the book to create happiness and satisfaction. There should be a better alternative.
The plot of the book is ordered and fast-paced. It is truly a page-turner book. You can identify strongly with the AI world when you read the book. There was no error in the book Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill.
I give the book a 5 out of 5 stars because of the exceptional editing. I recommend the book to young adults who are lovers of futuristic computer technologies and dystopian novels.
