This story focused on two drug users, Creek and his girlfriend Jennifer. Jennifer made an honest living and Creek hustled pool to take care of the rent and buy drugs. Creek had a strange sense of humor and his greatest accomplishment in the story was renewing his driver’s license without committing murder while he waited in a long line. Jennifer’s family cut her off because they considered Creek to be worthless, but she loved him anyway and they moved in together. The two seemed harmless enough and they liked to party and get high. No one had a grudge against them, yet a mysterious driver in an old beat-up vehicle constantly followed them.
One Friday night Jennifer and Creek did some drugs and went out to a club. They got toasted and their truck ended up running off the road. Minutes later, Creek was being transported to the hospital with part of a tree imbedded in his shoulder. Jennifer rode in the back with Creek and noticed an electronic humming sound coming from one of the EMTs. Then the EMT did the unthinkable! She protested and ended up in the road with a gunshot wound to her shoulder. Jennifer woke up in pain in an unfamiliar bed, and a new character, freelance journalist James, entered the picture. He patched up Jennifer’s shoulder and gave her food and pain medications. Can she trust him?
James filled Jennifer in on the many disappearances in the area, to include his wife. He suspected Creek to be the latest victim of a criminal ring and together they vow to bring down the culprits. Armed and ready to kill, James and Jennifer set out to face one enemy only to find out that it is much worse than they expected.
Greater Life Hospital closed 50 years ago, but the deadly duo trace the EMTs to its door. Deep in the bowels of the building James and Jennifer battled for their lives after they discover the most horrific site imaginable. Some things are worse than death, and these two made the ultimate choice.
I liked this short story and I would love to read a full length version. Mr. Horwath can delve into so many possibilities! This was an interesting, memorable, and surprising read that took a twist that no one would expect. I thought I had it figured out after the first ten pages, but I was wrong. I read it without stopping, and just like me, you will think twice when customer service at the DMV asks if you want to be an organ donor. I liked this book and would definitely recommend it to my friends. I give it four out of four stars for the action, the twists and turns, and the unexpected ending.
