There’s nothing quite like a soothing bedtime story. The Sleepytime Express by Alison Jones tells a relaxing tale about falling asleep. Because it is told from the second-person point of view, the reader is truly part of the story. You are about to fall asleep when the Sleepytime Express train comes to take you and other boys and girls to the Land of Blankies and Pillows. What happens when you get there? You’d have to read The Sleepytime Express to find out!

The smooth flow of the text made this book very relaxing to read. I love that it encouraged reader participation by asking which blanket and pillow you would choose. I can imagine young kids reading this book and gleefully pointing out which one they would have. Kids would be able to easily imagine they are actually in the Land of Blankies and Pillows. This is a fun way to incorporate the children’s own blankets into the reading of the story as well.

There weren’t many negatives to the book. A few of the illustrations seemed a little off. They were clearly done with care, but some felt a bit amateur. I’m not sure if all children would appreciate the idea of getting on a train as they fell asleep either. That might be unsettling for some kids to think they may have to leave their beds at night. I think with the right explanation of the Sleepytime Express train being a dream or fiction, possible fears can easily be assuaged.

Overall, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. The mild drawbacks were not distracting enough to reduce a star. It was an adorable tale that even made me feel relaxed and sleepy. It would be a great bedtime story. It was also exceptionally well-edited.

I think this book would be excellent for parents of young children. It’s especially good for young children who have a hard time winding down at bedtime. Check out The Sleepytime Express by Alison Jones!
