Review of Magic Every Month VI
Valentine's Day is a special day of the year for many. It is a day of love, after all. Apart from adults, children also like to celebrate Valentine's Day, perhaps in a slightly different but no less exciting way. And yet, what youngster has never had a crush?
Magic Every Month VI by Naela Hurst is a short story about a group of boys and girls getting ready to celebrate Valentine's Day. The children are getting ready for the party, but they also write special cards to each other. In addition to the children, the teachers are also excited and encourage the students to celebrate. Will it be revealed who likes whom and will anyone get any special gifts at the party? Read this story to find out.
First, this book is very short, and the whole plot takes place in just a few pages. I would have liked the story to have been longer so the reader could know the characters better. Also, all the characters seemed the same to me, and I got all confused when the author referred to them. Apart from that, the plot could have been developed much better and in more detail. Furthermore, colorful illustrations would enrich this story even more.
On the other hand, I like the concept of the story, which is the celebration of Valentine's Day, that is, love. I think teaching children early on the importance of care and love for others is desirable. Of course, it doesn't have to be a love crush; it's nice to give a gift to your friend whom you love and appreciate, and even to your parents. In the story, I like how all the children are involved in writing love cards and how excited they are about the party. In addition, I like how the teachers are involved in the whole process during Valentine's Day and how they support the students. Also, I came across only one error, and the book seems well-edited.
Overall, I give this story 3 out of 5 stars. Unfortunately, it left me unsatisfied because it was too short, and not much happened. I recommend this book primarily to elementary school teachers to read it to their students during February, the month of love, or Valentine's Day. It can be a good choice for an interesting class discussion.
