Review of Under the Covid 19 Storms
Lindiwe Bhebhe's Under the COVID-19 Storm is a book that discusses the virus known as COVID-19. At home, Polly and Paddy were subjected to the harsh reality of COVID-19. She writes secretly to her best friend Timmy through letters about her online classes, COVID-19, and the impact they have on her and her mother. The story is told from the viewpoint of a young child who lived through the COVID-19 pandemic, and it can be entertaining to see the world through their eyes.
In order to describe how COVID operates and define "COVID-19 storms," the author made use of Timmy. The author also tells the reader what life was like during the height of the COVID outbreak when laws were strictly enforced and offenders were punished with fines. In a letter to Timmy, Polly expresses concern that her homeschooling and confinement to her home are having a negative impact on her and could be the root of her possibly experiencing depression. This book discusses the Greek alphabet's relevance to COVID, and examples of the letters are provided.
Unfortunately, there were many realities of these times, to which people had to adjust. In one extreme case, people, especially children, were subjected to COVID tests every other week; in another, those who found the COVID restrictions imposed on them to be intolerable sometimes went to prison for violating them. Not every part of this book is pleasant to read because it depicts the harsh realities of the epidemic. I did not like some of Polly's mom's actions during the COVID era. She seemed to be a little too dramatic about it. It seems excessive to me to conduct at-home tests on children twice a week if they don't go anywhere.
It's fascinating to me that a child might view COVID favorably because it means she can stay home when she's sick instead of having to go to school while her mother tries to cure her with home remedies. Although she initially welcomed COVID's impact on her school because it would give her more time to play, she soon realized that the increased free time would be replaced by isolation and boredom. I liked that COVID has, perhaps paradoxically, increased people's appreciation for simple pleasures like going to class, seeing loved ones, and leaving the house.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars because I think it would be useful for a child going through something similar, as it would help them cope and gain insight into the emotions they are struggling to make sense of. The book's lighthearted tone and Polly's lovable personality are two of the main reasons I enjoyed it so much. Although I did notice a few typos, I think it was professionally edited.
Kids who are curious about life during the COVID era will enjoy this book. In addition, it can teach kids to recognize and process their emotions.
