Review of Dracula's Guest
Dracula's Guest by Amaya Tenshi is a sci-fi book about Slavic creatures. It presents a bit of the history of Moldova and its voivodes in a political context and an old-school strigoi's background and habits. Also, the book illustrates themes such as vampirism, friendship, survival, and murder.
Briefly, the story focuses on Cammy, a twenty-one-year-old barista who lives with her roommate, Heather, in an apartment in Seattle due to her parents' high expectations regarding her future. After she is evicted from her apartment for non-payment of the rent, she uses a dubious local rideshare service on Heather's recommendation to move her things. The situation escalates, and she wakes up in the middle of twenty vampires who want to kill her. Her shock is even greater when she finds out the identity of her mysterious savior: Vladislav Dracula.
I liked the character development, especially how the author outlined the character of Dracula despite the stereotypes of a vampire count. I enjoyed the storytelling and that Amaya Tenshi dismantled the myths about the famous strigoi. I appreciated the mastery with which she illustrated his reactions and his habits. For instance, I loved Vlad's hospitality toward his guests. Also, I admired Cammy's courage to venture into the unknown of a world full of vampires and empathized with her frustration when her parents questioned her responsibilities as an adult.
Another positive aspect of this book was its mixture of science fiction and fantasy. I enjoyed the descriptions of supernatural creatures in the modern world and found their clumsiness about new technology amusing. For example, I loved Vlad's awkwardness regarding modern technology, especially smartphones. Also, without giving any spoilers, I can only say that the plot twists intrigued me, but I would have liked the fights between the vampires to be more intense and full of suspense.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because there is no aspect I disliked about it. I enjoyed the mystery created around the famous character Dracula and loved how the author highlighted his personality. I liked the dynamics between Vlad and Cammy and the descriptions of Dracula's mansion. Also, Dracula's Guest was professionally edited since I discovered only six minor punctuation errors that did not affect my reading experience.
I recommend this book to fans of the supernatural, especially those who love books about vampires. It is perfect for those who want to discover a polite strigoi but not for those who are not interested in vampire slayers and shape-changing creatures. Also, Dracula's Guest is suitable for young adults and adults due to its non-borderline profanity and lack of explicit erotic content.
