Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Skies by Matthew Tysz is a book that tells the story of a young man named Galen who had to travel to a foreign country and search for new opportunities. The story chronicles his journey on a ship that took him from the Lands of the Princes to Voulhire. He met different and interesting characters while he sailed. Some of the people he met gave him an idea of what to expect in Voulhire. Although he had heard many things about Voulhire, he was surprised to see the dynamics of the country when he got there. He made close acquaintances with some people, including Rowan, the executor of his uncle's estate. Rowan was to help him claim the inheritance his uncle left him. Voulhire had King Wilhem as its supreme leader. Although the King was the supreme leader, he was kept in check by a man known as Midius. Midius is the High Chancellor of the Mianoran Council.
Voulhire, the country where Galen finds himself, is portrayed as an exemplary nation in terms of governance, administration, religion, politics, sorcery, and other civil matters. King Wilhelm is the country's leader and must ensure the safety and security of its citizens against external threats, including familiar foes like Meldorath. Meldorath is an old friend of the King and the former lord of Hilport, a town in southern Voulhire. However, Meldorath possesses dark powers that enable him to manipulate the town's inhabitants. He was eventually overthrown and sentenced to prison. To keep Meldorath's existence a secret, the King dispatches his trusted ally, Eldus. The king also mandated Eldus to develop Hilport.
You need to read this book to discover whether Galen can recover his inheritance, whether Eldus can transform Hilport, and whether Voulhire can maintain its status as an ideal country.
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Skies was a worthwhile read while it lasted. Despite the plot's beginning being slow, I enjoyed the pace at which it eventually developed. The slow development helped me understand the plot very well. It also made me appreciate the author's effort and creativity in structuring Voulhire. Its dynamics and workings perfectly reflect a civilized and industrialized nation. What I admire most is the relationship between the various institutions in Voulhire. I also enjoyed the conversations between the characters. I relished reading the conversations because they added substance to the plot.
I would have complained about the numerous characters, but providing a list of the various characters in the book's opening pages helped me understand each character's role. This made the reading experience easier. Hence, there is nothing that I dislike about the book. I have to commend the exceptional editing of the book. I didn't spot any errors. Therefore, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Skies to readers who love fantasy stories laced with civilization, sorcery, politics, and science. They will find this book enjoyable.
