Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is an enlightening book by Matthew Tysz that tells the story of Galen Bray, who has resided in the realm of the princes his entire life. There is severe hunger and suffering throughout the realm as a result of the bitter rivalry between the king's sons. Galen receives a letter from his ailing uncle, a successful blacksmith in Voulhire, in which it is stated that Galen would inherit all of his possessions. In search of a better life in a place that is abundant with wealth, he joins a ship and heads for Voulhire. Galen is in amazement of the amazing kingdom there when he arrives in Magnum Caelum, a little town in Voulhire, as it is vastly superior to the home he left behind. Is Voulhire everything Galen wishes for, and is he right in his assumption? Read this engaging story to learn more.
This book had a lot of positive aspects. The glossary included by author was very helpful in identifying some confusing words and terms in the book. The author utilizes his imagination to craft an entire world filled with wonder and magic, and I believe he was able to effectively deliver his point across. Although these ideas may seem complicated, he made use of straightforward grammar to convey the main message of his story to the reader.
Galen Bray is the main character and his journey is sure to inspire a lot of other people. All the other characters are written properly and have well-rounded emotions. The author revealed a lot by narrating the story from the point of view of multiple characters and the storyline was complex and entertaining. I believe the plot itself is centered on the wicked motives of certain self-centered individuals who desired the kingdom for themselves, as well as the beauty of a thriving nation. This work also addresses significant topics including conspiracy, greed, and abuse of authority.
Additionally, the author did a great job at building suspense. To find out what happened to the characters and how the story ended, I felt compelled to finish reading the book. This will entice readers to pick up the subsequent sequels given that this is the first book in the series. Another feat that deserves credit is how the author skillfully incorporated current events with a historical setting into his book. Both judges and jurists were female in the Voulhire courts. Lord Eldon's wife, Charlotte, was a public defender. It strongly represents the current state of affairs, in which women are hardly ever permitted to take positions of authority. Because of the book's extensive use of violence and vulgarity, I would only suggest it to adult readers.
I was unable to find any flaws in this book, which shows proof of professional editing. For these reasons, I will not hesitate to rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy fantasy literature and tales of medieval royalty.
