In a world of magic and civilization, the objective of every man is to survive, and no one gets in his way. The story We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz portrays the struggle for power between men of different races. The use of violence is frequent, and the city of Voulhire and its surrounding nations are the centers of such acts. From the land of the princes, Galen Bray moves to Magnum Caelum, narrowly escaping death to inherit his uncle's legacy as a blacksmith. All worked out smoothly for him as he was guided by his uncle's executor, Rowan, who taught him tips on the way to becoming a blacksmith.
On the west lies the city of Hillport, which lost two lords. Lord Orlin was accused of having a horrible record while in office, and the other, referred to as Lord Meldorath, took over the kingdom by force and violence. Lord Meldorath, being a powerful mage (a practitioner of magic) gave him the advantage to overthrow the Lord Orlin. Lord Meldorath, under the falsehood of being killed by the King's orders, was arrested and confined to a castle at the far south on Lorcia's isle. This made way for a new lord to rise to power. Lord Eldus was appointed by King Wilhelm as the new lord of Hillport. His reign, although short, was successful. His administration was brought to an end after the Riva Rohavi terrorists besieged the city and faced a threat big enough to stir a huge panic around the nation. The forces of darkness like Meldorath, Riva Rohavi, and others found their way back into society and threaten the safety of the beloved nation known as Voulhire.
The story We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz portrays how a society consisting of magic and civilization would coexist with each other. It provides the reader with ideas to expand their imagination. The author's ability to descriptively analyze the setting of the story makes it easier to visualize the story. I love the story because of its ability to cover areas of politics, family, lifestyle, and magic. The story acts as a bridge between fiction and reality while being very indulging and captivating at the same time.
Every literary work has one or two flaws, and this novel is no exception. Written by a creative mind, the story portrays the crude definition of the saying "survival of the fittest." The violence and bloodshed are too much for the weak-hearted. Overall, I rate this novel 5 out of 5.
This story should be read by people interested in ancient arts, magic, science fiction, or just wanting to kill time. I would recommend the novel to adults who love ancient arts and magic stories. The violence portrayed in words is too much for young minds to process. Aside from that, all in all, this is a great story, and I would recommend the novel and series to future readers looking for a worthwhile novel.
