In Apollo’s Raven, Linnea Tanner tells a tale of sorcery, love, and war. The main characters Catrin and Marcellus are thrown together with expectations on both sides to retrieve information. Catrin, a Celtic princess, and Marcellus a Roman lord are drawn to each other. There forbidden love is frowned upon by everyone else and drives both sides to commit deception against the other. These two characters are enemies and yet after spending quality time together, they no longer care about expectations. Catrin and Marcellus learn that love doesn’t care about rules, curses, family loyalty, or betrothments. Love is rarely a choice. Will Catrin and Marcellus choose each other or their families? You will have to read the book to find out.

I don’t normally choose historical fiction but, I enjoyed this story more than anticipated. Linnea Tanner has an amazing imagination. I loved all the mystical powers the characters possessed. The way Catrin could transfer her consciousness into her raven and how her brother Marrock could shapeshift into a wolf made for an interesting story. I really enjoyed the strong female characters and their sense of confidence. Catrin is my hero. As much as she has been through and all the trauma she has endured, she still thrives and moves forward ready to take on the world and protect those that she loves.

I have nothing very negative to say about the book except that some of the language used in the text was confusing to follow at times. Because the vocabulary was based on the time and setting of the story it made understanding what was going on more challenging. I had to stop and look up some words I had never seen before. This doesn’t, however, distract from the story or how much I enjoyed reading it. It makes sense for the author to use vocabulary appropriate for the time it is based in.

I would recommend this book to mature readers due to some sexual and violent content. Some of the topics discussed in the book might be disturbing for young readers. Otherwise, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about historical fiction, romance, and mystical happenings.

Overall, this was an amazing read, so I score this book a 5 out of 5. Apollo’s Raven appeared to be professionally edited considering I found no spelling or grammatical errors. I look forward to readying more books in the series and learning more about where the story leads my two favorite characters.
