Dream for Peace: An Ambassador's Memoir by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a memoir detailing the selfless life of the author. Dr. Ghoulem was born in Ain Beida, Algeria, to poor parents during colonial times when France colonized Algeria. Growing up, he was filled with love for his people and wanted more than anything to see them liberated.

In school, he led protests against colonization. This was until he got a scholarship to study in France because of how brilliant he was. He decided to study medicine and became the first scientist to discover the hypothesis of the reverse transcriptase enzyme. While in college, he started a group called the North African Muslim Students Association to help fight against the discrimination being meted out to them. He met his wife, Antoinette, during a police raid one night, when he had to run away because they accused him of inciting the uproar. He went on to become a diplomat of international accord and was instrumental in the independence of Algeria.

There were many things I loved about this book. I learned about world politics and how diplomats operate. The author gave us a front-row seat to even the most intimate meetings and conversations he had during the course of his job as a diplomat. The author wrote expertly about his life. He was honest and relatable. He taught his readers that one can attain the greatest height politically without losing his conscience. I saw a man who genuinely had the interests of his country at heart.

I also learned about the culture of the Algerian people and some of their local cuisines. The author gave us practical examples from his life. By marrying a Catholic wife as a Muslim, he taught us not to discriminate against people because of their religious beliefs. During the course of the book, the author made references to some other African heroes, such as Kwame Nkrumah and others. He also met with other notable world personalities, like Pope John Paul II, and his encounters with them were properly detailed in the book.

There was nothing to dislike in this book. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. My rating is high because of all the above-stated reasons. The book was exceptionally well edited, as I found no errors. I recommend this book to readers who are interested in African history and diplomatic relations. I also recommend it to people who enjoy memoirs.

Berrah was a man that went through a lot of trials and tribulations while growing up. It's a miracle that his life turned out the way it did.

Dr. Ghoulem is a great man that did a lot of noble causes in his time. He fought for independence and also for peace in all and sundry. His bravery in his cause to fight for a just society is what I admire most about him. Well done.

I was impressed by the detailed approach in which the author describes his story and the engaging writing style that made me feel like I was conversing directly with the author. The book also includes pictures of most of the people mentioned, which gave me a better visual of the story.
