We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book of a medieval fantasy series by Matthew Tysz. This book is centered on the nation of Voulhire, an advanced nation with religion, magic, and science. Part of the book is told from a first-person point of view and is about Galen Bray, a refugee from the Lands of the Princes who immigrated to Voulhire for a fresh start. The rest of the book is focused on world-building and getting to know the Voulhirian characters from different backgrounds.

The world-building in We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is amazing for a fantasy series. Everything about the nation of Voulhire is told in detail throughout the story: the different regions, the history, the different cultures, the magic system, the religion, and the natural resources that can be found. As a result, Voulhire is a unique setting compared to similar fantasy settings in different forms of fantasy media. Chapter 1 is especially amazing as it briefly tells the readers about the history of the protagonist's birthplace and why he had to escape. As for the Voulhirians, I like how the author takes the time to differentiate the groups and individuals who are central to the story from each other. Each character in the story has their own motivations and goals.

As a first-time fantasy novel reader, I was initially overwhelmed by the number of pages and the unfamiliar setting. But as I spent more time reading the book, the world-building, the battles, and the variety of characters all encouraged me to continue reading the book. I also liked Galen’s development as he learns more about his family history, makes new friends, and adapts to his new life in Voulhire. It made me interested in the character.

Overall, there is nothing in the book that I disliked. I liked the world-building, the characters, the battles, and the fantasy elements. This book is exceptionally well edited since I saw no errors throughout the story. I give this book five out of five stars. I am excited to read the next book in this amazing fantasy series.

I recommend this book to readers who love the fantasy genre. Readers who love fantasy stories with detailed world-building and character development will enjoy reading this book the most. I also recommend this book to mature young adults because this book contains graphic violence, profanity, and references to sex.
