For a quick, interesting and easy read, while at the same time, I just finished my first David Baldacci, The Forgotten. It was given to me and I am very choosy on mysteries, but apparently I have been living under a rock. He writes in several different types of series, according to Goodreads. When I want a nice break, I will pick up another of his books.

I like one of Agatha Christie's lesser known sleuths, but now cannot remember his name for some reason. He was a younger guy with glasses. In one of his stories he investigated the murder of a much hated man (he was shot near a bridge), which made every member of his family an automatic suspect. Anyone?

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - I couldn't put it down and I usually don't read mysteries. Read it BEFORE the movie comes out and all the surprises and ending will be ruined for you.

Tell No One by Harlan Coben is a good one. A lot of characters to follow, but he really knows how to write suspense. There's also always the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich :)

Wow, it looks like you have already received some great recommendations!

Perhaps if you've worked through this list near Christmastime, you might like to try C.C. Benison's Father Christmas mysteries. The first two of the series are already out: Twelve Drummers Drumming and Eleven Pipers Piping. His newest installment, Ten Lords A'Leaping will be released this December.

Tom Christmas is a young, widowed priest (raising a young daughter with the help of a housekeeper whose letters to her mother insert great comic relief) in a small English village full of fun characters.

Alan Furst isn't new, but I recently discovered his spy thrillers. Just finished "Kingdom of Shadows" and quite enjoyed it.

I'm not saying enough recommendations; I just wanted to drop a quick note to say thanks so much to everyone! I knew Online book club people would come through for me. I've already gotten a few of your recommendations on my Kindle and I look forward to getting into them. We have a move coming up with a rather long plane ride--I think I'm all prepared. There's really nothing like a good mystery novel! Many thanks!

I don't like gore in mysteries either, but do like a knotty, suspenseful plot with a lot of twists and turns and well-wrought characters. That's what I wanted to do in my courtroom thriller A QUESTION OF PROOF. I think you might enjoy it. Here's an excerpt of the Kirkus review:

"A strong courtroom [drama] that hooks you fast - and pulls you straight through to a knotty, post-courtroom surprise ending...Neat storytelling...you'll never guess who did it." ~Kirkus Reviews

Best wishes on your move, the long plane ride sounds like it's to a new country.I don't know how to make a link to Amazon work on this site, but I did a search for free mysteries for the Kindle and got over 300 results, sothere are plenty for you to choose from, and they all seemed pretty highly rated on the few pages that I looked at.Here are two that sound good and safe from gore~The Circular Staircase by Mary Roberts Rinehart
The Man in Lower Ten by Mary Roberts Rinehart .

I am not usually a big mystery fan, but I enjoyed "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn so much that I immediately read her other two books. I enjoyed those as well.

Yes, you're right about the trip. Retiring from the military; we have an 11 hour ride from Germany to Seattle. I'll go look at the Mary Roberts Rinehart. The Kindle has been so convenient for me while we've been in Germany; free books, rentals and borrowing, and I've bought my share of books as well. Getting books instantly is a huge plus because the mail takes at least a week or two to get here.

Thanks for the suggestion; it looks great! Your other books look pretty interesting too. Just out of curiosity, how have you found the republication in the e-format to be? Publishing is a different animal now than it used to be, isn't it?

Thanks Kalamazoo! Gone Girl is one of the books I have downloaded on my Kindle, and I really look forward to reading it. Good to know that it's going to be a good one!
