Review of Purpose
Gina Bianchini’s Purpose: Design a Community and Change Your Life is an inspiring, thought-provoking paradigm for building and sustaining communities. The value of authenticity, shared values, and a feeling of togetherness is emphasized. Her stressing of community and the feeling of belonging goes hand-in-hand with her steps toward finding purpose. The author highlights how we can use technology to bring people together and create a more connected and fulfilling world. She also emphasizes how important technology is and how it can be used to help build communities, despite the common perception that technology is causing people to become more individually isolated. Bianchini makes the point that finding one's purpose can be connected to being part of a community. Overall, Bianchini's message is that communities are essential for human connection and growth, and that technology can be leveraged to help foster these important connections.
Purpose is bursting at the seams with positive aspects, one of which is that you can truly feel that the author is trying to make a difference in the world with her written words. She simply lays out the guidelines–making it oh-so-easy to be successful in the community that is being built. She tells real-life success stories leading back to her, with familiar names thrown about: Yoga with Adriene followed certain steps to get where she is now, all with help from online communities linking back to Gina. Her descriptive steps, work-along example questions, and work along writing prompts keep the text engaging to the reader and help the reader think deeper about the content of the book. The manner in which Purpose is structured–informative, yet interactive–is useful and fun for various types of audiences.
While the cons of Purpose are few and far between, every good book has its flaws. One negative aspect of this book is the repetitiveness of the steps: the same exact thing gets said over and over again. However, this may be due to the simple fact that the author is trying to stress exactly what steps need to be taken in order to successfully execute your goals. The author also warns of this beforehand–that the steps are a cycle. The title, Purpose: Design a Community and Change Your Life, does not give justification or show in any way that this book is mainly for those who are start-ups or entrepreneurs, or even simply more of the extroverted lifestyle, despite mentioning that one does not have to be introverted or extroverted to participate in this. Bianchini certainly details some steps that introverts may not feel comfortable stepping up towards. However, these cons do not take away from the wonderfully engaging and motivating text that is Purpose.
This book receives a rating of five out of five stars. It is as polished and organized as the tone the author gives off. It is also extremely professional and could be used to motivate in a work setting. The steps are laid out simply, and the way each idea is explained in such depth is captivating and inspiring all at once. The text is extremely professionally edited and easy to follow along with.
The recommended audience for Purpose is anyone who has even a little bit of motivation to get their life started on a purposeful track–for anyone who wants to find their purpose. If you read deeper, you may even say that this book is especially for those who are growing and building their own communities. Although it is a book to help find your self worth, it may specifically be for those who have a purpose of being a leader. This book is especially beneficial if you have an extroverted orientation, as the steps given may fit more in suit with this lifestyle. If you're looking for guidance on where to find your purpose in life, or you’re someone who is becoming a leader in your community, this is the book for you!
