Notorious Love In Extraordinary Times is a historical fiction novel by Emma Strong. It comprises many other genres like romance, crime, law, and human drama. This book follows one man called Sam Strong (not related to the author), who started poor but managed to make something out of his life and literally struck gold. Now he is facing a new set of problems that he never knew when he was a poor man. It is moving and entertaining. But most of all, it is soothing.

Samuel Strong is a hardworking man who will do anything to provide for himself and his wife. His job in the small town of Cripple Creek, Colorado, forces him to make dangerous journeys across the mountains in any weather with his horses. Whether heavily snowing or raining, Sam does not quit his job. He is determined to work hard. His wife always worries for him when he makes these trips. One night he returns from work and goes to the bar, where is he invited by his brother George to hang out and drink with his friends. This is where they talk as men, and the topic changes to the gold rush that is happening currently in their town.

Sam tells his wife that he wants to go explore mining possibilities, but his wife can’t take it any longer. Sam asks for a loan and opens a formal business, and hires a few local men to search for gold, and they find it. It is official, Sam is a mine owner, and he calls it: ‘The Strong Mine.’ Around him, more mines start opening, and Sam expands his business venture to saloons and real estate. He is now rich. The town is rapidly growing, attracting people from all over the country. While Sam engages in sexual escapades, he meets a physician called Dr Merrick, who charms him. Can Sam, a man of this power and influence, manage to get a woman who is outspoken in her own right like Dr Lillian Merrick? What about his newly found riches? Can he manage them wisely? Are there people who are envious of him and want to cause him harm? How will Sam navigate these dangerous waters?

Notorious Love In Extraordinary Times was a very interesting read, indeed. This adult periodic book took me back in time to those forgotten old-age eras when men were obsessed with riches and wanted to escape poverty. The tale of Sam Strong was very inspiring to witness. He started with nothing, but with determination, dedication, and persistence, he ended up with everything. I liked reading this book. It delivered on its promises. The world-build was outstanding and well crafted. The descriptions employed here were concise and apt. They painted the pictures with ease without giving out too much to ruin the experience. My imagination had a chance to fill up here and there to give me that new experience.

The characters were well-established. Although the book focused on Sam as a protagonist, it also switched here and there to focus on other characters who also played bigger roles, like Dr Lillian Merrick, for example. The narration took less space than the dialogue. Meaning, most times, the dialogue was the one carrying the story in its book, moving it forward at a steadily increasing pace. The narration slowed things to add information to give a full picture. The language was fitting for the late 1800s. This shows that the author did her research. It didn’t at all sound modern. When I was ready to complain that that was not how people speak, I remembered that it wasn’t based on recent years.

What I disliked about it was that from the last quarter to the end, the book felt rushed. It was like the author couldn’t wait to wrap up the book. That’s why there were too many chapter breaks. In some cases, chapters were unusually way shorter than others. The conclusion felt lukewarm to me. I think the conclusion betrayed the book’s powerful moment. Had it not taken the direction it did on the last two pages, the ending would have been powerful. Now it just left me with too many questions, which I am not sure I will ever get answers to.

With everything I have said above taken into great consideration, I rate this book four out of five stars. It contains strong language and themes that would be suitable for a mature audience. So I strongly recommend it to people from the age of twenty upwards. It would appeal to readers of historical fiction and who like the rags-to-rich type of novels.
