I would give it 10/10, very emotional and honest with no excess. Definitely one of my favorite books!

I read The Highest Tide back around 2006 & it didn't do it for me at all - I couldn't recommending it to be honest.Ant wrote:The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch, the story of a 13year old vertically challenged boy with a love of the sea, and what lives in it, his relationship with his parents and the love of his life.. the girl next door.

Today I finished Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood ... what a book and what an imagination! I enjoyed it immensly and can't wait to get started on The Year of the Flood. Oryx & Crake is a definite 5* - no surprise it got nominated for the Booker in '03,just surprised it didn't win.

I have read both "Oryx & Crake" and "The Year of the Flood" and loved them both. The third book just came out, but I have heard it is less good than them.Fran wrote:I read The Highest Tide back around 2006 & it didn't do it for me at all - I couldn't recommending it to be honest.Ant wrote:The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch, the story of a 13year old vertically challenged boy with a love of the sea, and what lives in it, his relationship with his parents and the love of his life.. the girl next door.

No, I share your pain A24. Just finished it and though I thought Morgenstern has a very nice writing style which I enjoyed reading and the story was very original I almost gave up on it at more than one point too. The book had great descriptions of visual imagery and I could accept the surrealistic qualities but it just seemed to drag on forever. It got better about half way through but as Fran noted the ending was not good at all. My previous read was The Hunger Games and while I also had some criticism of that book I enjoyed it FAR more than this one. I'd give The Night Circus a 2.5 of 5*. It's worth reading for the reasons I mention above, and I would cautiously recommend it, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it highly.A24 wrote:DATo, you probably will like it as you and Fran have verry similar tastes in books. I had a real hard time with this book as I too, hate the circus, clowns, etc. I wasn't able to get over that or into the book. I put it down after about 80 pages. But, I'm definitely the minority as most people rave about this one.Fran wrote:@DAToDATo wrote:gali and Fran,

OK, you've convinced me. Just put a library "hold" on it online. I'm first in line for it so it should be available for pick up in a day or two.
I think you will like it .. I'll be looking forward to your opinion.

This is one of my favorite books. I highly recommend the audiobook read by Wil Wheaton. He does an amazing job, I've listened to it 5 times. In fact, if you like audiobooks I'd recommend anything read by Wheaton. He picks amazing books to work on and he really draws you into the story.elle_ibanez wrote:I just finished "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline for fun-- GREAT book!

I thought it was good but..... You kept jumping from one character to the next. And you never get the male character point of view.

Good plot, witty writing and humor and enough twists to keep the mystery going.
