Bring your imagination and join George, Ella, and Maxwell in Hockey Island. Explore a magic island with snow every day and ice rinks for roads. Everyone skates and plays hockey. There are also interesting characters for readers who don’t skate. Max makes a cement truckload of special hot chocolate with extra marshmallows. George collects treasures in a special box. Ella skates beautifully in a skirt made of seaweed. Together they see the Northern Lights and learn about wind words. Readers explore the island together and meet the neighbors.

Hockey Island is written by 3Sisters (Dora Verne Kishibay Garabedian, Karen Yvonne Kishibay, and Darby Marya Kishibay Hobbs). This children’s book is creative and unique. The text is large, clear, and easy to read. The simple yet beautiful watercolor images lead the reader to use their imagination more than in modern children’s books. The story is very descriptive, each young reader can form their own mental picture of Hockey Island.

On a negative note, a few of the pages have a lot of text. Pages twenty and twenty-one have no illustration at all. These make it more difficult to keep the attention of the youngest readers. The reading level and amount of text are more suited to a slightly older reader.

I rate this book five out of five stars for being an exceptionally well-edited and enjoyable children’s book. I identified no errors. The negative point above is not enough to deduct a star. It is only my experience reading the book with children under the age of three.

I recommend this book to kids aged five to ten. Younger readers can enjoy it with their parents’ help. Every child should get to know the magic of Hockey Island. Kids of all interests can enjoy this book as it is not just about hockey.

Thanks for the review! This sounds like a fun and creative book about skating and hockey! I like watercolor illustrations because they are often softer looking.

That was my daughter's favorite part too. We had to make cups of hot chocolate that night because she was obsessing. :lol2:
