A woman named Julia has a generational gift of sight that helps her serve as a conduit for children stuck between Earth and Heaven. One day, the voices of children pleading to be rescued begin to invade her dreams. Their pleas are in Haitian Creole, and thus her investigation begins. Julia begins to uncover a dark web of human trafficking involving underage children going on in Haiti, and she resolves to rescue these children. Contacting her best friend, Christian, they make their way to Haiti for what can be termed a rescue mission. They make contact with some other top officials in Haiti and around the world who would aid them in this mission, but would they be successful? Can this team of empathic, highly determined individuals overthrow the deep-seated corruption and evil funded by the world's elites in Haiti?

Conduit by Nell Haynes is quite an emotional book. The issue of human trafficking is not something one hopes to come across in her everyday life, as it only goes to show the lengths of human depravity. However, in this albeit fictional story, Haynes shows us what it can look like when the wealthy decide to use their wealth for something illegal and morally disturbing, like human trafficking of underage children. We're led through a series of events showing how powerful the determination of one woman can be in changing the course of human trafficking in Haiti.

We explore beautiful themes such as friendship, which is seen with Julia and her best friend Christian, as well as with members of her rescue team. We also explore themes of courage, empathy, and so much more. We navigate through negative themes such as corruption, greed, and betrayal. There's a lot to love about this book. I especially loved the attention to detail in certain scenes and how this helped reel me into the loop of events as they unfolded. I also loved how this story managed to add an unsuspecting twist to the friendship between Christian and Julia, leaving the readers with a maddening sense of suspense as to "what's next?" And finally, the author ended this story on a cliffhanger.

However, I managed to find some flaws in this book, starting with the punctuation, or lack thereof. Most of the sentences ran into each other, and this affected the readability of the story for me. The matter of the irregularity that occurred at the end when the children communicated with Julia in an unusual manner left me a bit perplexed, as the significance of this switch was not addressed by the author. The large number of punctuation errors as well as grammatical errors I found in the book was suggestive of the fact that the book was not professionally edited.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. If the book had been professionally edited and a little more depth had been given to some of the characters, I might have given it a better rating. If you're looking for a short novel to read while enjoying the sunset, then this book might be just the one for you. If you're also someone who believes in the supernatural and in mediums with an interest in uncovering conspiracies, then consider this book an additional bonus.

The storyline sounds interesting, especially how the protagonist is able to receive messages from the mishandled children. It also addresses one of the worst vices ailing society, which is a good thing as it raises awareness about this evil going on in the underground. Hopefully they manager to take down the human trafficking cartel.
The gift turned out to be a curse. They killed him with kindness.
