Re: Ebook or paper book?

I have Fibromyalgia which causes pain and one of my worst sources of pain is my hands. When they hurt it can be very difficult for me to hold a real book, even a small book requires you use hand muscles to grip it and keep it open. It is much easier for me to hold my Nook because it is so much lighter and I can turn pages by taping a button. I also spend a lot of my reading time with my Nook propped up so I don't have to hold it at all. I'm very grateful that I am able to read without causing my hands pain. Although I do admit that I get frustrated when I try to read non-fiction books on my Nook. They usually have tables or sidebars that mess up the formatting. For those, I either have to deal with the hand pain or read them on my laptop.

I have found that the answer is situational for me. I love having an eBook version for while I am travelling or at school. But There is something about a physical copy that just makes things feel more tangible.

I am without a doubt a paper book kind of person. With that being said, I have transferred myself into the world of ebooks for convenience. The main reason I switched was for efficiency. I have been reading books at such a fast pace recently that going back and forth to the store to find new ones was exhausting. Plus, eBooks are slightly cheaper. I am definitely not a fan of reading a book from my phone, since I can never seem to remember where I placed my iPad, but the efficiency and convenience of having them on me at all times is a definite bonus.

I just got a Nook, and I really love it. I agree that it's not the same as an actual book, but I had been reading very few books before I got it, mainly because I never had time to go to the library. E readers don't give you the same feeling that a book does in terms of the physical object, but they do give people access to literature. That being said, I love books and will continue to buy them from bookstores. There's just something more special about doing that than downloading a book onto an E reader.

Hello y'all! I have to say that with me having both a Nook and Kindle I still find myself buying books! I would much rather have a actual book to hold while I am reading! Plus I agree with some of you that it is pretty awesome having full bookshelf's! i do find myself buying books on one of my E Readers if I started a series and can not run out to get the next book!

I prefer paper books. I love the feel and smell of them and the ereader just does not compare. However, i had to upgrade to an ereader since i no longer had room in my house for books. I was collecting too many. It was my dream to have my own library of books, but atthe moment it will have to wait. For now, it is the ereader. Sigh.

Hi all, I'm new here and still finding my way around. :D

I read through the replies to this and I do agree with Carrie B. Fibro is rough and some days are worse than others. For me reading a book on my Ipad mini is fantastic for those of us with pain issues, as well as for those with other difficulties when holding an actual paper book.

Plus, if I'm reading and need a break, it's cool to skip over to Facebook or a Word game. Then it's back to the book.

Glad to be here!

I have a kindle but i love to have a book in my hands. to be able to smell the paper I'm reading from. I will always keep my books. I will never have to worry about my kindle going dead on me if I keep my paper books.

I am a paper book lover! Nothing beats the texture of a page between my fingertips, the smell of the pages wafting towards my nose as I find myself falling deeper into the story and watching my bookmark as it makes its journey towards the end...

However, I just bought a Kobo Glo E-reader despite my avid love of traditional books only because I read a lot (and it will be cheaper in the long run), I have a 1 year old who has begun the habit of pulling my books off of the shelves to eat them, I sometimes read more than 1 book at a time and they end up in piles all around the house, or they make my purse quite heavy to carry.

I prefer paper any day but for the sake of practicality, I have invested in an e-reader and trying it out. So far, I love it and the front light doesn't bother my husband as he is trying to get to sleep at night since I no longer need to use my brighter bedside lamp.

I personally love both. Reading is my passion and no matter what form it's in it is still a book in my opinion.

I have only recently started reading e-books and the only ones I read are ones that are free that i stumble upon. It gives me a chance to read something I may not have read otherwise. If there is a certain book i want to purchase then i will get the paper copy :)

Both! I love my bookshelf at home, full of books and I love going to the book store to purchase new books as often as I can! The nice thing about e-books is just the simple fact that you can put the book on anything. (cellphone, nook/kindle, ect.) It makes it nice when your reading a normally huge book but you don't have to carry the big book all over the place.

These days I do most of my reading on my Nook, but I love my bookshelves full of "real" books too. And if I read a book on my Nook that I really love, I'll usually track down a hard copy to add to my shelves. You have a much greater sense of permanence when you can hold the actual book in your hands, and there is still nothing like the smell and feel of a book in your hands. My first memory is of the smell of old books, and there will always be a place for paper books in my home and my life!

Paper book!
Nothing beats the feel and smell of a book.
with an e-reader you dont get to really appriciate the book, you dont get to feel if its smooth, silky, if the words are risen ip on the cover.
If people keep buying e-readers there'll be no use for real books :(
plus who doesnt love paper cuts :)

I absolutely love using an ebook reader and much prefer that over a paper book. Before I got my first ereader, I read one or two books a year. After I bought my first Kindle, I read 17 books in a year. That went down significantly after I upgraded to an iPad and now I just bought a Kindle Paperwhite a couple of weeks ago and have already read three books. Having an ereader helps me get into reading more. They are convenient and it's nice that if I don't have my actual Kindle with me, I can read on my phone.
