Mary Grace and her brother, Donny, were being sent to their grandparents in California. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miller, were moving to Africa after Mr. Miller was sent for missionary work in Kenya by the St. James Episcopal Church. For over 10 years, Mr. Miller had served as the priest and rector of the church. Despite Mary Grace's disappointment about being left alone, Mr. Miller was eager to embrace his new responsibilities.

He sent both children to California, hoping they would have a wonderful time with their grandparents, Cathy and Steve. Unfortunately, their experience wasn't going to be smooth sailing, as Donny faced harassment and bullying at their new school, North Elementary School. Donny, who had Down Syndrome, became an easy target for mischievous children who mocked and mistreated him. To discover how they coped with these challenges, read Catherine A. Pepe's book, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures.

This book was a delightful read, which was its most appealing aspect. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the Miller family. Mary Grace's achievements and Donny's zest for life were captivating. However, it was Donny who truly stole the show for me. He consistently radiated happiness and love toward everyone. Even in difficult situations, Donny maintained a positive outlook. For instance, he eagerly looked forward to spending time with their grandparents, finding joy in the experience, while Mary Grace complained and expressed her reluctance to see their parents go away.

I carefully searched for errors and typos in the book but found none. Therefore, the editing was exceptionally well done. Furthermore, I couldn't identify any negative aspects or reasons to deduct any stars from my rating. Therefore, I give this book a stellar rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend it to children aged 9 and above who appreciate novels that shed light on the challenges faced by children with special needs.
