Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy book. It is the first book in a series of nine books. The author through his imagination and observational skills has created different characters and experiences to introduce readers to the kingdom of Voulhire, the perfect country. Or is it? Themes such as spirituality, politics, war, crime and money are discussed.
Galen Bray, the protagonist is a refugee who migrates from his home country; The Lands of the Princes, to escape a lifetime of war caused by their rulers. He travels under difficult circumstances to Magnum Caelum, a city in Voulhire, where his great grand uncle's estate awaits him as the only surviving heir. He has hope for a better future in the city of talent and hard work.
The magnificent Voulhire hosts different towns; Soulhire-its capital, Virgo, Yamon Soul among others. Each characterised with different capabilities and limitations. The country is known for its posperous nature and happy citizens. The king, Wilhelm Arcolo is dedicated to ensuring that voulhirians experience and enjoy the best, following after the footsteps of their founder king Saint Idus.
However, the country faces threats from terrible lords, individuals and groups. Hillport a subsidiary of voulhire is at the receiving end of the brutality of terrible lords who not only kill, but also sexually abuse children. In addition, the Riva Rohavi, a rebellious group is dedicated to cause terror to the voulhirians and will go to all lengths to ensure that they suffer.
Despite this, voulhire has wonderful leaders who try to make changes to benefit the society. Lord Eldus and his family are my favorite. It was painful that they were assassinated. I however found solace in knowing that their son Marshus survived the attack. Marshus the best of all, is playful, brave and intelligent. The exchanges between the father and son are one to look out for meaningful insight and entertainment.
The author has integrated aspects of the traditional English culture and the modern culture in his writing in an interesting and unique way. The book has the right amount of humor, suspense and mystery to keep the reader intrigued. As a fan of non-fiction I can attest to this. I look forward to learning more about voulhire from the upcoming volumes as I was greatly entertained.
Two worlds; the physical world(Cosmos) and the magic world(Caromentis) are presented in the book in an a creative way that peaks the imagination of the reader. Their is a significant amount of violence explained vividly which I found disturbing. Moreover the book ended abruptly in a way that I did not expect. The many characters explained were a bit confusing.
The book would be suitable for a young audience. Young adults to be precise. The main characters presented in the book are mostly youthful. This audience will find the individual journeys somehow relatable to their own and gain life lessons. To understand the characters well one will have to evoke deep thinking and apply better judgement to analyze, a suitable read for a mature audience.
The book was edited well as I did not find any grammatical mistakes. It was an enjoyable read. I loved the characters. Women have been represented in leadership in an inspiring way. Mathew's style of writing is unique as he has combined both the modern and traditional English culture in the book. It is for the above reasons, that I rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies 5 out of 5 stars.
