I found the first chapter a quick read that has me wanting more. Your review does a good job of explaining the book without giving too much away. My uncle had a coach that ruined his pitching arm in high school. He made my uncle (a solid southpaw), pitch a doubleheader. He threw his arm out, lost his scholarship, and never pitched again.

“Billy Jones’s Father” by Fred Engh takes place in North Carolina where Scotty Jones is the focal point of this story. He is a war veteran that constantly belittles his son Arnold because his son is not as gifted in baseball as his father. When Arnold has a son he decides to raise his son to do his best and not abuse his son like he was abused. It was sad to see the abuse inflicted by Scotty Jones and I can recall abusive fathers when I played Little League baseball. Fortunately, my dad was very supportive and never belittled me if I did not play well. Very good review of a well written book.

It's thoughtful that parents want to push their children to do more but it's wise to take their welfare and disposition into consideration. Sport enthusiasts who want to be the best at what they do have a lot to gain from the book. Congratulations on BOTD.

Too many times we see parents pushing their children way too hard to excel almost to the point of abusive behavior, if not out right being abusive in their zeal to have the perfect child. This book is about such a relationship and a father trying to break the cycles of abuse to show his son a better life. Congrats on #BOTD

This book sounds like a compelling portrayal of an abusive parental relationship and an attempt to not continue the cycle. It’s also an interesting perspective on the fixation on youth sports and how it can affect children. I never had that problem with my parents, but I know that there are other people who had such issues growing up, and I think they’ll be able to connect with this book. I am dismayed with Arnold's father's lack of tact when broaching the subject of baseball with his son. It's kinda mistreatment. I like the fact that when he is of age, Arnold uses a different tactic of impacting baseball skill with his own son. Thanks for the review.

Definitely something I would read. A good sport infused book is always a yes for me. Scotty sounds like a horrible person and father. To push your child to compete in sports is not a bad thing however; sometimes as a parent you must realise that your child's interests are maybe not the same as your own. I truly hope Arnold did not turn out to be like his father. Thanks for a detailed and interesting review!

The sample literally took me on a trip, into the lives of each of the characters introduced. I believe the plot twist in all of this is that Scotty Jones and Emma are going to get along just fine; they both seem to be unconventional, well suited for one another. I know the title is Billy Jones’s Father, but who is Billy? I don’t think we got to him yet.
