If anyone is interested is listening to traditional Irish music and its modern counterparts while engaging in a good read, livestream www.wobc.org from 6 to 7 pm EST today for my live show called All Things Irish! :-)
(I'm usually on Thursdays at that time - at least as the college [Oberlin College] is opened.)

Traditional Irish music is great stuff to listen to when an escape from worldly thoughts and concerns is needed. Loreena McKennit is one of the best things that ever happened to Irish music and she's one of my favorite singer/songwriters of all time! Know her? Some of the best stuff she sings and arranges is composed to poems of great English and Irish authors. Her song, "The English Ladye and Her Knight" is one of my favorites, composed to a somewhat condensed version of the Walter Scott poem. She uses a lot of traditional instruments and has a fiddler in her group that would knock the socks off even Yehudi Menuhin!

To Nathrad Sheare: YES! Very familiar with her!! If you're not aware of other groups in this genre, you'll have to check out Cherish the Ladies, Altan, Dervish, Teada, and the list goes on!! :D

Oh, nobody I've spoken or written to has known who she even is! This is a little exciting... Thanks for the other recommendations. If you hear any traditionally styled songs by any other Irish artist that you find amazing, PLEASE let me know! Let's face it, Celtic Woman just doesn't cut it! Ha, ha! Thanks so much! I own all of Loreena McKennit's currently released albums. Got a favorite of hers you'd like to mention? At one of her concerts a couple of years ago, a guy yelled out over the crowd while she was giving her intro,"Loreena RULES!!!" Yeah, he got that right. :D

"Dante's Prayer" is one of my favorite songs around. It made me almost bawl a couple of years ago. "The Highwayman" is a favorite of my family. The Book of Secrets is a great album. Awesome. I'm looking into those artists you recommended.

Can't say I ever heard of Loreena McKennit but trusty Google tells me she is Canadian but we'd be more than happy to claim her as a fellow Celtic girl :)

I do hope you are not overlooking: The Chieftains, The High Kings, Christy Moore, Sharon Shannon, Martin Hayes

OO OO!! PICK ME!! PICK MEE!!! I love Loreena Mckennit! Found her one day while surfing You Tube when I was 14 and I have been hooked to her ever since! I can't get enough of her! I even go back to You Tube just to listen to a cruddy recording of her "Gallant Soldier." I own all of her CD's, well, besides her live recordings...although, those are AMAZING too! A woman who can sing in and out of the recording studio. She is a dying breed. :( But I figure, "Oh well! I know her, and that's all that matters."

More and more suggestions! Wonderful! Yes, Loreena is Canadian, but she has a lot of Irish roots and REALLY knows how to write Irish music!!

Merci so much, ObieBookworm! Another great thing about songs written in the traditional Irish style is the sound of the vocals, don't you think? Some of these people can really SING!
