Embarking on a journey with your sibling can be an incredibly enjoyable experience. The prospect of making new friends in an unfamiliar school and cherishing moments with your grandparents can also bring immense joy. However, for Mary Grace, the situation takes a different turn. When her parents announce that they must embark on a mission in faraway Africa, Mary Grace is devastated by the news. She feels a sense of abandonment and questions whether her parents truly care for her. Conversely, her brother Donny eagerly anticipates his trip to California to visit Lucky, the penguin, and his friend Ed.

Mary Grace's transition into her new school proves to be a challenging endeavor. She finds herself caught in the cruel grip of bullying, which only intensifies her struggles. Will she be able to adapt to her new environment and forge new friendships? How will the Grandma Gang step in to help her overcome the torment inflicted by her bully? Accompany Donny and Mary Grace on their captivating journey as they navigate this mystery-laden tale with the unwavering support of the Grandma Gang.

Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe presents a multitude of information about individuals with Down syndrome in a manner that is both informative and engaging, avoiding any hint of preaching. It serves as an excellent educational resource for elementary school children, promoting the values of kindness and compassion. Moreover, it proves particularly valuable for young readers who may encounter bullying or adversity within their school environments. One of the most heartwarming aspects of the book is the profound love Mary Grace holds for her brother. Despite her own moments of sadness, she diligently hides her emotions, always prioritizing Donny's happiness above all else. Her unwavering devotion to her brother is truly touching, leaving a lasting impact on readers.

In addition to its engaging storyline, the book takes a thought-provoking approach to exploring pertinent social issues, including bullying and the negative effects of stigmatization. It underscores the incredible power of forgiveness, showcasing its ability to bring about healing and positive change.

By weaving together the characters' experiences, the book imparts valuable lessons about the consequences of our actions and the significance of personal responsibility. Through relatable narratives and relatable characters, it encourages young readers to confront bullying, demonstrating the importance of treating others with kindness and compassion and standing up for what is right.

There was nothing I disliked about this book. The book was exceptionally edited, too. Therefore, I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend this book to young readers who are navigating the complexities of social dynamics and facing challenges such as bullying and stigmatization.
