Review of The Second Five

Thanks for the good review. It led me to conduct a few searches on the Fraser canyon gold rush. I also read the sample, and especially liked two phrases from the introduction, one serious, the other humoristic:

- The serious one - "The Second Five reflects the words of Alexander the Great, “Remember, upon the conduct of each depends the fate of all.”

- The humoristic one - "The Second Five can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone book without reading The Deadly Five. However, those willing to read both books will find it is like wearing two socks instead of one."

Well, I never wear only one sock. Do you ?

Good move to start the review with character descriptions, because I got immediately interested in what those strange mix of people can have incommon. The Gold Rush is not an unknown period for me, I read Jack London as a child, but I'd like to see a more mature side of it.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because the author is an excellent writer in making this book into an action-filled adventure in the wilderness that makes the readers clueless in every twist. Wilderness adventure fascinates me, like fur trading, canoe river travel, and camping strategies, especially in making tasty meals, cleaning, and hunting animals for food. Moreover, the author knows exactly when to add the harmonious singing sensation to their gold-digging journey. Plus, the lovable pets add a unique twist when reaching the climax of the story.

The review brought the story to life with the characters and the setting for the story. Not being familiar with the gold rush time in British Columbia, this historical novel will help me fill in a gap and add a comparison with the stories of the Gold Rush in the Colorado area.

Trust, fellowship, and friendship are certainly great pillars on which to build a story. This book sounds as if it has all the elements of a terrific historical adventure. I don't typically read sequels, but I may have to check out the first book in the series.
