Official Review: A Pocket Full of Posies My Life With Can...
"A Pocket Full of Posies My Life With Cancer" is Deborah Leistikow's own experience of succumbing to cancer and then fighting it to lead a normal life!
Being a non fiction, I was afraid that the book would be a yet another scary and saddening account of a cancer fighter but was surprised by the ease with which Deborah retells her ordeals with Cancer and makes her account an entertaining story which gives a fresh perspective to a normal woman's fight against cancer.
The first thing that struck me was the positive attitude of the author who was thrown in deeply depressing and disheartening situations but she never lost hope and always kept a positive outlook.
This book could have been a serious and saddening account of a cancer fighter but became a story that inspires, makes the reader smile and also gives one strength to believe that even in our darkest and most hopeless moments one can still be happy and find a ray of sunshine in our lives.
Deborah had everything running fine in her life. She had a loving family, a great job and a cozy house. Above all, she had always been healthy with only some minor ailments in the past but all this changed when she started experiencing pain in her body and on checking with a doctor was diagnosed with cancer.
Suddenly her life had changed and even though she could have crumbled and questioned her fate, she decided to fight. She fought for 15 years and with cancer that attacked her twice. Her life and her whole world changed dramatically in those years but she didn't lose hope. She found reasons to stay happy and motivated and finally emerged a winner.
The writing style of the author is simple and she effectively portrays her emotions in the book. As a reader, I was able to experience her pain, her hopelessness, her anger and her confusion but could also feel her strength and determination to see the positive and hope for the best.
Her descriptions of her childhood, her family and her job are lively and sketch a picture in the mind of the reader.
Although at places she deviated from the topic but she still kept me interested and skipping pages to know what happened next!
An added bonus to her story are the pictures of her and her family all through her treatment stages which for me gave a very real touch to her account. I could finally connect my mental picture with a physical one and smile thinking about a woman who braved cancer and hope her account gives new motivation and guidance to all other victims and their loved ones to fight and defeat this disease!
All in all, a very refreshing story and a book that brings to light the plight of a cancer victim along with inspiring and giving hope to all the victims and their friends and relatives that cancer is not the end and one can still lead a normal life.
"...final lesson to self: Get off your behind and go for a walk! You may have to live with your body for a very long time..."
I give it a rating of 3 out of 4 and encourage everyone to read it as it is a worthwhile read for everyone. This is not just a cancer braving account but also a story of hope and determination to withstand all difficulties and come out a winner.
