In Expendable Soldiers 3: Counterpunch, SJ Aspen takes us back to 1942, a time when Australia's peaceful existence under the protection of the mighty British Empire was shattered by the Japanese occupation of parts of New Guinea. Among the captured soldiers in one battle was John Knight, who escapes with a few comrades after enduring the horrors of war. Now, as a lieutenant, he leads a team of commandos on daring missions, relying on their expendable status and sheer determination to confront the formidable enemy forces.

As a fan of historical fiction, I was immediately drawn in by the Western Pacific setting, a less-explored facet of World War 2 stories I have read. SJ Aspen's writing vividly brings to life the chaotic battlegrounds and intense combat scenes, successfully immersing readers in the high-stakes world of fierce fighting. For those seeking an enthralling and action-packed historical fiction adventure, this book delivers.

However, the novel is marred by several editing flaws. Over ten errors were present throughout the book, indicating a need for another round of editing to polish the text. Repetitions were also noticeable, leading to redundant sections that hindered the overall flow of the story. Moreover, the inconsistent shifts in tenses disrupted the narrative's cohesion, detracting from the reading experience.

Despite these issues, Expendable Soldiers 3 still manages to captivate readers with its gripping storyline and engaging characters. The perilous missions and constant reminders of the soldiers' expendable nature keep the tension high, and readers will find themselves eager to uncover the fate of Lieutenant John Knight and his team of commandos.

In conclusion, Expendable Soldiers 3: Counterpunch offers an action-packed historical thriller with a compelling narrative and vibrant setting. However, the presence of editing flaws, redundancies, and tense inconsistencies does detract from the overall enjoyment of the book. Therefore, I rate this novel three out of five stars, with the hope that future editions will address these issues, allowing the story's true potential to shine through; it surely deserves a perfect rating.
