A wonderful review that shares the heart wrenching experience that the character has gone through without giving away too much! Many women who come from “traditional families and/or cultures” will be able to relate!

I do not wish this for anyone with such dreams. Mostatime,we blame all on destiny and circumstances when we have the will power to make decisions or choices that best suit oneself. Pregnancy is not a huge problem to stop one from achieving goals . Curious, if Candy still went after her dream. Great review.

It seems that this book has a strong theme. Marking remarkable and debatable points, depending on the level of thought of each person. Great recommendation, thanks for the review.

This well-written historical novel seems to do a great job showcasing what would happen if America were to make abortion completely illegal and move to a male-dominated society again. Great review!

There seems to be many themes in this book and all were timely and relevant like illegal abortion, depression and work discrimination among others so I’m looking forward to digging into this one to find out how Candy Krzyzanowski survives all the challenges she face as she tries to achieve all what her heart and mind crave for.

think I'm unfamiliar with the janus tradition. The theme of the gender equality and women' struggles is always intriguing to read. I agree that Candy's character is admirable, though her experience with abortion is the most difficult to read. I might still want to read this one. Great review!

The metaphor of glass and pain. The women’s traditional role, women’s rights and struggles. A life story, compelling, heart wrenching.

Candy seems to have a tough life. She has to fight against the usual tradition and pursue her career. I still can't wrap my head around the culture of giving birth to a daughter in January to get the coveted inheritance.
I like your review, it is compressive.

A thought-provoking story of women's rise within male-dominated careers and the issues of fertility and reproduction in those male-dominated fields.

“Against the Glass” by Linda M. Habib is a story about Candy Krzyzanowski who wanted to break the traditional family female role by going to college and pursuing a career. This conflicted with her mother’s plan for her to get married and produce the Janus heir. The women in her family have competed for thousands of years to be the first to birth a daughter in January to receive the coveted family heirloom, the Janus coin necklace. Sadly, her dream of achieving the Janus coin necklace shatters when she must terminate her pregnancy through an illegal abortion before the Roe vs. Wade decision. The abortion left her broken and she fell into a serious case of depression. A compassionate doctor encourages her to pursue a career as a doctor but she believes the road to a medical degree in a male-dominated field will be hard to achieve. The story began in 1966 so I question the college barriers referenced for women since I began college in 1970 and at least half of the students were female. Very good review.

Abortion is a controversial issue that has eyebrows raised worldwide. In a male-dominated world, I admired Candy's tenacity to “break the glass ceiling” and strive to live her own life. Thank you for writing an insightful review!

'Official Review: Against the Glass' by Linda M. Habib is a fluent and spontaneous description of the historical fiction story for readers. The reactions to the book provided by the reviewer were interesting to follow. The point that the writing realistically painted the struggles a young woman faced trying to step outside the mold and find equality with men is worth mentioning in the review. The theme of the story of a young woman determined to break the mold of the traditional female role was literary and fascinating. Also, as mentioned in the review, the point that the author filled each scene with various themes and images centered around the fragile nature of glass and the delicate balance of life is remarkable for readers. It was great to learn that the writing was poetic and thematic literature with a full-circle conclusion!
