Review of Zona: The Forbidden Land
We all grew up hearing the epic adventure tales of famous explorers from all over the globe. Our inner explorer is stirred again by Fred G. Baker's ZONA: The Forbidden Land, which invites us to accompany his protagonist on his journey over the tundra and remote regions of Northern Siberia in search of a forbidden land called Zona.
Dr. Grant Taylor travels to Russia to claim his uncle Randall's assets as the sole heir after Randall is reported missing and believed dead while leading an expedition in Siberia. He meets Boris, Randall's friend and attorney, and Irina, his niece, who volunteers to assist Grant in working through the legal nuances of acquiring Randall's home. Everything is going according to plan until Grant encounters a mystery man named Godunov in a bar who makes a suggestion that there is more to Randall's disappearance than what is being disclosed. Grant finds evidence that support Godunov's assertion in hidden spaces in his uncle's home. He then discovers that Boris has set up a search operation in a bid to locate Randall, who was last seen alive by Colonel Volkov, the lone survivor of that disastrous expedition. Grant and Irina end up joining the expedition that is being led by Volkov, despite the fact that they weren't initially intended to participate. An enthralling story of adventure, friendship, terror, loss, love, and mutiny is what comes next.
The plot moves along at the ideal pace, allowing the reader to take in each chapter of the experience. Along the course of journey, romance blossoms amongst the team members, but there's a twist. Randall's diaries allude to the existence of Zona, a mystery continent home to unusual and huge animal species. Volkov led his squad through incredible perils in an effort to locate his missing expedition comrades, whether they were living or dead. The readers will be in awe of what they learn and discover during their journey. The explorers are tested morally and physically by Zona itself, which drives them almost insane. Whether they survive or not, it's upto the readers to find.
I would give it a 4 out of 5 because of the challenging suspense, vivid writing, and expert editing. However, some questions remained unanswered and a there are more than one loose ends.
Overall, I heartily endorse this tale, with a caution to exercise some discretion because it involves graphic violence and sexual themes that not everyone may find appropriate.

“In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun.” ― Madeline Miller, The Song of Achilles
