Official Review: DIGGING A HOLE IN THE GROUND and other d...

Post by HateToWin »

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "DIGGING A HOLE IN THE GROUND and other design classics" by Niall Hedderman.]

Digging a hole in the ground and other design classics discusses the ways in which the methods of design are moving forward with new inventions such as the 3D printer becoming more widely available, as well as how the way in which people perceive design and designers could hold that progress back.

The main focus of this book is to try to change the way you think about designers and the products that they make, its not as simple as a single person having an idea and making the perfect product. Its a lot of time, as well as a lot of revisions to get a product that is ready to be released, and it is something that anyone can do, not just the professionals.

I enjoyed the way this book handled the topic of designing things and the process behind it. It made it simple to understand and used good analogies to make its points stick better. It did a good job of explaining the mindset you should have going into a project as a designer of pretty much anything.

I also like the idea of Democratic Design that it brings up and the ways in which it could help to make better products, as well as the flaws in the system such as figuring out who would get what percentage when a product that has been designed by a large group of people becomes popular and the struggles that would entail.

I couldn't find much that I did not like about this book, it was well written and to the point, although I do have two slight issues with it, the first being that it is to short. While it did do a good job of going into detail with some of the subjects it brought up, I felt it could have been longer and been more in depth with others. It also has a few spelling mistakes, which isn't that big of a deal, but in a book this size it pops out more than it would in a larger book.

Although it is incredibly short and does have some spelling and grammar mistakes, that doesn't detract from the overall message that the author is trying to get across, and he gets his points across very well. Overall I would give this book a 4 out of 4 and would recommend it if you are interested in a short read about design that may change your perspective about the process of how things get made.

Thanks for the detailed review HateToWin, I will work on the spelling and grammar, my apologies for not being more thorough.

The book is deliberately short, I wanted to keep to the point and avoid diluting the ideas unnecessarily. That said, there is so much more that can be said about design, maybe I will write a sequel.

I went through the text again and edited the errors I found. The book is written in British english, some of the 'ise' will look odd to American eyes no doubt.

I have also lowered the price to $0.99 on Amazon, so is is more accessible.

Thanks again.
