Five pitfalls that cause a love life to stink are in the book. The list is not exhaustive, but the most common problem areas the author has witnessed. The first topic is vanity. Choosing a partner for materialistic reasons is a red flag. Egotism and narcissism are relationship no-nos and lead to shallowness and can cause infidelity and crimes of passion. Pity is a behaviour example that often results in manipulation. Coddling and overprotecting a partner can become domination.

Other relatable behaviours are explained, such as settling for less and the toxic act of entrapment. Another relationship downfall is possessiveness, the demand for control. Possessiveness is different to jealousy. Jealously usually comes from a lack of self-esteem, trust, and confidence. Although different, both are terrible traits to bring to a love affair.

I liked the author's writing style. He gets his points across clearly and intelligently. There is some humour and lightheartedness intertwined with the serious content. I enjoyed a personal story from the author's childhood and how it emphasised a point. I particularly liked the numerous examples to describe a particular behaviour like entrapment. Reasons for this behaviour are fear of being alone, financial insecurity, coercion, and Stockholm Syndrome. I found it fascinating and terrifying how deceitful and conniving individuals can be to exert control and domination. I hope that any readers in this situation will recognise these toxic traits and have the strength to remove themselves.

I found two spelling and grammar mistakes in the book, but they did not hinder my enjoyment. I believe the book has undergone professional editing. I found the book interesting, and it is a tool for those who have not been lucky in love. The words are insightful and articulate. I found nothing to dislike about the book, and it is an asset for adults ready to form a long-lasting commitment. I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars.
