YAY i was looking for this forum, SLAM is the best kind of poetry for me. Colleen Hoover was the one who made me love this.morganinga wrote:I read a book recently called "Slammed" and the secondary plot line had a lot to do with slam poetry. What is the difference between slam poetry and regular poetry?

Slam is the art of spoken word poetry, it's when you recite your own poem it doesn't rhyme and you can't use props you have to express what you are saying with the tone of your voice, your pauses or speed and of course the words. Its beautiful.
These are my favorite you can look them up on youtube:
Mike Rosen "When God Happens"
Benjamin Barker - "Rubik's Cube"
Slam poetry by Amal Kassir at the Mercury Cafe, Denver, Benefit for Not One More Acre
National Poetry Slam: Sierra DeMulder
Michael Lee - "Waking Up Naked"
AND MY ALL TIME FAVORITE : "Katie Makkai - Pretty" that woman is AMAZING!
copy and paste those names on youtube and hope you like them as i did, keep me posted if you can.

This isn't true. There are no restrictions on rhyme at any slam I have read in and I have read in many and won in several.
I've slammed in rhyme at the Mercury in Denver, around turn of the century.
Poetry in general is meant to be "spoken word" Slam is not some special category because it is spoken. When one goes to any "poetry reading", the audience doesn't sit down and read a few pages of poetry. It is always presented as spoken word.
