Review of A Story of the Beginning (Revised Edition)
A Story of the Beginning (Revised Edition) is a fiction work by Jason Albano. This copy, which is the updated version of the 2016 publication, "Giovanni Salzano the Traveling Mercenary: A Story of the Beginning," came with proper references, corrected historical information, additional chapters, etc. The story in this book revolves around Giovanni whose father, Corradeo was seen on April 28, 1509, in the Republic of Venice, telling the family to be of good courage as he prepared with his brother Bonaventure for battle with the French. These men were mercenaries who pledged allegiance to the Compagnia Mercenaria Libera del Grande Imperium, translated as the Free Mercenary Company of the Greater Imperium. As the story progresses, the Faithful Eternal of Rome decides to eliminate the Salzano family. Do you want to know why? Did these two brothers make it back alive from the battle? Keep reading. Felicia, on the other hand, was a beautiful young girl in love with Giovanni. Her parents seemed unsupportive because they wanted her to marry Aldus in the hopes of increasing family wealth.
The one thing I like about this book is the author's descriptive prowess; the fighting scenes were so real that I felt like I was featured in the events that happened in this book. Also, the editing and character development in this book were professionally done. This book has a lot of Italian language and the corresponding English translation that an interested mind can learn from.
I kept searching for a clue as to why a priest would take up the sword and attack Salzano Villa. The adage that the sins of the ancestors have a way of coming back to haunt the children was well captured in this book. It happened that the Salzano's are mercenaries, and to be free, a debt must be paid. Read through this book to learn about this debt, which must be paid to guarantee freedom.
If there is a continuation of a series in this book, I would like to read it and know if Giovanni succeeds in taking down the pope and Father Saul, who was after his life; did he build back his inheritance? I would also like to know more about Giovanni's love life; did he take Felicia back as his lover? This book has a lot of bowdlerized scenes, so the prospective reader should be aware. In consideration of the above, this book receives a four out of five stars. I feel the story in the book should be developed more.
Finally, I recommend this book to those who love reading war thrillers and suspense books. This book will also be a good read for war veterans and anyone interested in learning the Italian language.
