Kite’s Creek by L.R. Bowman is a Western mystery novel set in 1869 that brings the reader back to the Wild West and its lawless inhabitants. The main character of this story is the fearless seventeen-year-old Zelda Lacy. Zelda is suddenly and tragically left alone after the cold-blooded murder of her parents on the family farm in Boonville, Missouri, and the disappearance of her brother, Clay. She sets off to the lawless Hays, Kansas, to find her troublemaking twin brothers, Elias and Elgin, to see if they can help her find her parents’ murderer and her missing brother. Zelda encounters plenty of help and hardship along her journey, but will she be able to find Clay or closure about what happened to her family?

My favorite part of this book was the author’s exploration of family. Zelda has many family members, some of whom bring value to her life and some who have only caused her trouble. What Zelda doesn’t expect is to find a friend more loyal than her blood along the journey. Slim Dugger is a man without a family but has enough love and loyalty to create a bond with Zelda that goes beyond blood. I love the author’s juxtaposition of family in such a short novel. I found nothing to dislike within this novel.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The text is well-edited, as I found only a few grammatical errors throughout the seventeen chapters. The story was action-packed throughout every section of the book without being predictable. Zelda’s story is not traditionally happy, but the author evokes every emotion through the plot: anger, profound sadness, and even hopefulness. I thoroughly enjoyed every page.

I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy the Wild West setting and accompanying language. Zelda’s story is action-packed but concise. Bowman did an excellent job of wrapping this shorter story with enough intrigue to keep readers engaged until the last sentence. I caution young readers against this book due to the violence, alcohol use, and occasional profanity within the story.
